Chapter 9

The interior of the sleek, black town car was quiet, insulated from the noise of the city and the madness they had just left behind. The leather seats were soft and warm. Streetlights flashed rhythmically through the tinted windows, casting passing shadows over Evelyn and Lily in the backseat.
Evelyn had kicked off her expensive heels the moment the car doors closed. She pulled Lily into her lap, wrapping her arms tightly around the small, trembling girl. The adrenaline was finally beginning to wear off, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion, but Evelyn refused to let it show. She needed to make sure the emotional damage to her daughter was mitigated immediately.
"How is your shoulder, sweetie?" Evelyn asked softly, gently rubbing the spot where Lily had hit the marble floor.
"It hurts a little bit," Lily murmured, resting her head against Evelyn's chest. "But I'm okay. You saved me, Mommy."
"I will always save you," Evelyn promised, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to the top of Lily's head. "I want you to listen to me very carefully, Lily. Look at me."
Lily tilted her head up, her big blue eyes meeting her mother's dark, intense gaze in the dim light of the car.
"What Grandma said to you tonight... about adopted children," Evelyn began, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "I need you to know that it was a lie. A cruel, terrible lie from a very sad, very angry woman."
"She said I don't belong," Lily whispered, a fresh tear sliding down her rosy cheek.
"You belong to me," Evelyn stated with absolute, unshakeable conviction. She cupped Lily's face in her hands. "You did not grow in my tummy, but you grew in my heart. The day I brought you home was the best day of my entire life. You are my daughter. You are a thousand times better than anyone in that ballroom tonight. Do you understand?"
Lily sniffled, a small, tentative smile finally breaking through her sadness. "I love you, Mommy."
"I love you more than everything in the world," Evelyn smiled, pulling her back into a tight embrace. "We are a team, just you and me. We don't need them. We never needed them."
The rest of the ride home was spent in comfortable, healing silence. Lily eventually fell asleep, the rhythmic motion of the car lulling her into a safe, deep slumber. Evelyn held her close, feeling the steady beat of her daughter's heart against her own. She had burned her entire past to the ground tonight, but looking down at the sleeping child in her arms, she knew she had never made a better decision in her life.

She had protected her cub. She had secured their future. The financial executions she would enact on Monday morning would be swift and merciless, but for tonight, she just wanted to be a mother holding her child in the dark.
The car eventually pulled into the quiet, heavily gated driveway of their estate. The driver opened the door, and Evelyn carried Lily inside, the heavy sapphire dress sweeping across the floor as she carried her daughter up to the safety of her bedroom, far away from the monsters in tuxedos and pearls.
