Chapter 6

The silence in the ballroom shifted from shock to a palpable, electric anticipation. The guests, sensing the sudden change in the power dynamic, leaned in closer, the rustling of their expensive fabrics the only sound in the bright space.
Marcus, the Security Manager, held the tablet up slightly so the screen was visible to the immediate circle of family members. His American accent was crisp, authoritative, and entirely unsympathetic to the elite crowd.
"We monitor the grand ballroom with high-definition, 4K security cameras from twelve different angles to ensure the safety of the guests and the protection of the venue's assets," Marcus stated calmly, looking directly at Julian. "When the chair was tipped, my team immediately pulled the feed to assess if medical intervention was required."
Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously against his tight bow tie. "This... this is a private family matter. Turn that off."
"I'm afraid I cannot do that, sir," Marcus replied, his voice firm. "An assault occurred on these premises. The authorities require us to preserve the evidence."
Marcus tapped the screen of the tablet. "Would you like to see what the camera directly above this table captured exactly three minutes ago?"
Evelyn didn't take her eyes off Julian. "Play it, Marcus."
Marcus hit play. The volume on the tablet was turned up to maximum. The video was silent, but the incredibly clear, bright colors of the screen showed everything in damning detail.
The footage showed Julian standing near the edge of the table, looking around shiftily. It showed him pulling his own smartphone from his tuxedo pocket. It showed him leaning down, pretending to tie his dress shoe, and deliberately sliding the phone beneath the heavy linen tablecloth, right under Lily's chair.
The video then jumped forward two minutes. It showed Eleanor approaching from the rear. It showed the vicious, calculated kick to the chair. It showed Lily falling, the plate shattering, and Eleanor walking away.
The crowd of relatives gasped collectively. The whispers erupted into a loud, frantic buzz of absolute scandal. The pristine, rosy-skinned guests who had been perfectly willing to believe that an adopted child was a thief were suddenly confronted with the grotesque reality of their own bloodline.
"You planted it," an aunt whispered, staring at Julian in horror.
"You kicked a child, Eleanor!" a cousin shouted, pointing at the matriarch still sitting in the spilled wine on the floor.
Julian backed up a step, his hands raised defensively. "It... it was a joke! It was just a prank to teach the kid a lesson! It got out of hand!"
"A prank?" Evelyn asked, her voice dangerously soft. She stepped toward her brother, the sapphire dress flowing behind her like a regal cape. "You framed a six-year-old for theft, and your mother physically assaulted her. You wanted to call the police, Julian? Let's call them. Let's show them this video. Let's see how the board of directors at your firm reacts when you're arrested for child endangerment and filing a false police report."
Julian’s eyes widened in absolute terror. His entire life, his career, his standing in the white American elite society, was built on reputation. Evelyn was holding a match to his entire world.

"Evelyn, please," Julian begged, his voice dropping into a pathetic, frantic whisper. "Don't do this. We're family. Think of the scandal."
"You lost the right to call me family the second you targeted my daughter," Evelyn replied coldly, the victory absolute and final.
