Chapter 3

The paralyzing shock that gripped the ballroom shattered the instant Eleanor’s cruel words echoed through the space.

"Lily!" Evelyn screamed, her voice tearing through the ambient noise with a raw, maternal terror that made the blood run cold.

She abandoned all pretense of high-society decorum. Evelyn shoved her own chair back so violently it tipped over, the sapphire fabric of her evening dress pooling wildly around her legs as she dropped to her knees on the hard marble floor. She didn't care about the sharp shards of shattered porcelain scattered around them, nor the ruined food staining the hem of her expensive gown.

Evelyn rushed forward and immediately lifted her crying daughter into her arms. Lily’s breath finally hitched, returning to her lungs in a series of ragged, terrified sobs. She buried her wet, rosy face into the crook of her mother’s neck, her small hands clutching desperately at Evelyn's diamond necklace.

"I've got you, baby, Mommy's got you," Evelyn chanted frantically, her hands running quickly over Lily's arms and legs, checking for cuts or broken bones. "Are you hurt? Please tell me where it hurts."

"My shoulder, Mommy," Lily wept, her tiny frame shaking like a leaf in a hurricane. "Why did Grandma push me?"

Before Evelyn could unleash the absolute inferno of rage boiling in her chest toward her mother, a new shadow fell over them.

Evelyn’s younger brother, Julian, stepped out from the crowd of stunned onlookers. At thirty-six, Julian was a handsome man by conventional standards, dressed in a sharp, tailored tuxedo with a crisp bow tie and a white rose boutonniere pinned to his lapel. His fair, rosy skin was pulled into a tight, arrogant sneer, his dress shoes crunching slightly on the broken porcelain as he stepped closer to the fallen mother and child.

Julian didn't look at his weeping niece. Instead, his eyes darted purposefully beneath the heavy drape of the linen tablecloth. He pointed an accusatory finger toward a sleek, expensive smartphone lying conspicuously on the floor, hidden just beneath the spot where Lily’s chair had been.

"Look at this," Julian announced, his voice loud enough to ensure the surrounding guests heard every word. He bent down and snatched the phone from the floor, holding it up like a trophy of undeniable guilt.

Evelyn stared at him, her beautiful face contorted with confusion and growing fury. "Julian, what the hell are you doing? Your mother just attacked my child!"

"Attacked her?" Julian scoffed, his sneer deepening into a mask of pure, ugly contempt. "Mother was simply stopping a thief. I’ve been looking for my phone for twenty minutes. The little rat had it hidden under her chair."

"That is a lie!" Evelyn yelled, clutching Lily tighter against her chest. "She hasn't left her seat since we sat down!"

"The evidence is right here, Evelyn," Julian sneered, stepping closer, looming over them with a threatening posture. He looked at the surrounding guests, playing the victim. "Toss her. She took my phone, next she'll take the valuables. We all knew bringing street trash into this family was a security risk."

Lily lifted her tear-stained face from Evelyn's shoulder. Her wide, innocent blue eyes stared at the smartphone in Julian's hand, completely terrified by the angry men and women surrounding her in this bright, beautiful room. She clung tightly to her mother, her small fingers gripping the sapphire silk.

She shook her head frantically side to side, her voice breaking through her sobs.

"Mommy…" Lily cried, her American accent thick with desperate pleading and fear. "I never touched it. I promise, Mommy, I never touched his phone."

Evelyn looked at the tears streaming down her daughter's innocent, rosy cheeks. Then, she looked up at the coordinated, vicious smirks on the faces of her mother and her brother. The realization hit her with the force of a freight train. It was a setup. A coordinated, premeditated attack designed to humiliate her daughter and force them out of the family forever.

The fear evaporated from Evelyn’s heart, replaced instantly by a cold, lethal, and absolute wrath.
