Chapter 10

Two weeks had passed since the disastrous wedding banquet. The fallout had been exactly as swift and brutal as Evelyn had promised.
Julian’s venture capital firm had filed for bankruptcy after his primary funding was abruptly and legally terminated. Eleanor had been forced to list the family estate for sale, unable to maintain the exorbitant property taxes and staff salaries without Evelyn’s monthly infusions. The society pages had buzzed with rumors, though the exact details of the night were kept suppressed by Evelyn’s aggressive legal team, holding the security footage over their heads like a guillotine.
Evelyn and Lily had settled into a new, peaceful routine. The toxic stress that had always lingered on the periphery of their lives was gone, replaced by a quiet, joyful serenity.
It was a bright Saturday morning. Evelyn was sitting at the massive marble island in her kitchen, dressed in comfortable cashmere loungewear, sipping a cup of hot coffee. The sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the room in warm, cinematic colors. Lily was sitting at the table nearby, happily coloring a picture of a dragon breathing fire.
"Mommy, look!" Lily proudly held up the drawing. "The dragon is protecting the castle!"
"It's beautiful, sweetheart. It looks very fierce," Evelyn smiled warmly, taking another sip of her coffee.
The chime of the front gate intercom echoed softly through the kitchen. Evelyn frowned slightly, setting her mug down. She wasn't expecting any visitors today. She walked over to the security panel mounted on the wall and pressed the video feed button.
The screen flickered to life, showing the heavily fortified wrought-iron gates of her estate. Standing outside the gate was a man in a dark, tailored suit. He didn't look like a delivery driver. He had fair, rosy skin, graying hair, and held a sleek leather briefcase in his hands.
Evelyn pressed the intercom button. "Yes? Can I help you?"
"Evelyn," the man's voice came through the speaker, crisp and distinctly American, yet carrying an edge of cold, bureaucratic authority. "My name is Richard Sterling. I represent the original adoption agency that handled Lily's case six years ago."
Evelyn’s heart skipped a painful beat. The coffee suddenly tasted like ash in her mouth. The agency had been closed for years, buried under a mountain of sealed, highly confidential legal documents that Evelyn had paid a fortune to secure.
"The agency is defunct, Mr. Sterling. And my daughter's adoption is closed and finalized," Evelyn said, her voice steady despite the sudden spike of adrenaline rushing through her veins. "You have no business here."
"I am afraid I do, Evelyn," the man replied smoothly, looking directly into the security camera. "Your mother, Eleanor, reached out to us last week. She provided us with some very... interesting financial incentives to reopen a review of the biological mother's original contract. It seems there was a secondary clause that was never properly executed."
Evelyn gripped the edge of the security panel, her knuckles turning white. Eleanor had played her last, desperate card. She couldn't touch Evelyn financially, so she had gone after the only thing Evelyn truly cared about.
"You have twenty-four hours to respond to the summons in this briefcase, Evelyn," the man continued, his tone devoid of empathy. "Or we will be returning with a court order to take the child into temporary state custody pending the review."

The screen went black as the man slid the heavy envelope into the secure mailbox by the gate and walked away.
Evelyn stood in the bright, quiet kitchen, the silence suddenly deafening. She turned slowly to look at Lily, who was still happily coloring her dragon, completely unaware that a new, far more dangerous war had just arrived at their doorstep.
