Chapter 8

Evelyn turned her attention back to the shivering little girl holding her hand. Lily’s face was stained with tears, her pristine flower-girl dress slightly rumpled, but she was looking up at her mother with a profound, awestruck adoration. She had just watched her mother slay dragons.
"Are you ready to go home, sweetheart?" Evelyn asked, her voice returning to that soft, melodic warmth that she reserved only for her daughter.
"Can we, Mommy?" Lily asked, her blue eyes wide. "I don't like it here anymore."
"Neither do I, baby," Evelyn smiled. "Let's go."
Evelyn tightened her grip on Lily's hand and turned toward the grand exit. The crowd of white American relatives, realizing the absolute financial ruin that had just fallen upon Eleanor and Julian, parted instantly, offering a wide, clear path to the doors. Nobody wanted to be caught in the crossfire of Evelyn's wrath.
"Evelyn, wait!" Julian pleaded, taking a desperate step forward, his dress shoes crunching loudly on the broken porcelain. "Please, we can talk about this! If you cut my funding, I'll go bankrupt by Tuesday! I'll lose the house!"
Evelyn didn't even break her stride. She didn't look over her shoulder. "Then I suggest you start packing this weekend, Julian. Real estate moves fast."
"You can't do this to your own mother!" Eleanor screamed from the center of the ruined banquet table, her voice cracking with hysterical panic. "I gave you life!"
Evelyn paused just before the massive double doors. She slowly turned around, the bright, cinematic lights of the chandelier casting a majestic glow over her sapphire evening dress. She looked at the woman who had tormented her for thirty-eight years, and who had tried to pass that torment onto an innocent child.
"You gave me life, Eleanor," Evelyn said, her voice echoing with finality across the silent ballroom. "But I had to find my own family to learn how to live it. Do not ever contact me or my daughter again. If you come near us, I will release that security footage to the press, and I will let the world see exactly what high-society breeding looks like."
With that final, devastating blow, Evelyn turned back around. She pushed the heavy brass handles of the double doors, and walked out of the ballroom, leading her daughter away from the toxic wasteland of her past and into the cool, quiet safety of the night.

Behind her, the wedding banquet descended into absolute chaos. Shouting erupted, accusations flew, and the carefully constructed facade of the Bennett family shattered into a million irreparable pieces, much like the porcelain plate on the marble floor.
Marcus, the Security Manager, stood by the ruined table, quietly ensuring no one followed the mother and daughter out. He looked at Julian, who had collapsed into a chair, holding his head in his hands, and offered a small, grim smile of satisfaction. Justice, in the end, had been served beautifully.
