Chapter 8

The Vale Estate sat on a sprawling acreage in the northern hills, a testament to old money and generational arrogance. The iron gates were locked, but they posed no obstacle to the heavy reinforced bumpers of Gabriel’s armored fleet. The gates buckled and crashed to the gravel driveway beneath the relentless force of the lead SUV.
By the time Gabriel stepped out of his vehicle, his men had already neutralized the estate’s private security, dragging them silently into the manicured hedges. The torrential rain had stopped, leaving a heavy, suffocating mist in its wake. Gabriel walked up the sweeping marble steps and kicked the heavy oak front doors open. The sound cracked through the silent mansion like cannon fire.
Inside the grand foyer, Serena and her father, Richard Vale, were frantically shoving passports and stacks of cash into leather duffel bags. At the sound of the doors splintering, they froze, turning to see the devil himself standing in their hallway.
"Gabriel!" Serena shrieked, dropping a stack of bills. She backed away, her elegant evening gown torn at the hem, her perfect makeup ruined by panicked tears.
Gabriel walked slowly into the foyer, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble. He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply walked toward them with the devastating, quiet inevitability of a collapsing star.
"You left the gala early, Richard," Gabriel observed, addressing the terrified older man. "I thought you were enjoying the champagne."
"Gabriel, please, listen to me," Richard begged, putting his hands up in a placating gesture, his face drained of all color. "The Romanovs, they threatened us! They were going to kill my wife, my daughters! We had no choice!"
"There is always a choice," Gabriel said, stopping mere inches from Serena. He looked down at her. The arrogant, polished woman who had humiliated Martha just hours ago was trembling so violently she could barely stand.
Gabriel reached out, his tattooed fingers moving with terrifying gentleness as he picked up her left hand. Serena whimpered, closing her eyes, expecting him to break her wrist. Instead, Gabriel slowly, methodically slid the massive diamond engagement ring off her finger.
"You sold my children," Gabriel whispered, the silence between his words hanging like executioner's blades. "You traded starving orphans for your father's gambling debts."
"I’m sorry," Serena sobbed, falling to her knees on the marble floor. "I’m so sorry."
"I know," Gabriel replied, slipping the ring into his pocket. "But apologies do not buy back condemned land. Marcus."
Marcus stepped forward, a heavy, suppressed pistol in his hand.

"Drain all their offshore accounts. Transfer every cent to the orphanage foundation," Gabriel ordered without looking back. "Then, call the Romanovs. Tell them the Vale family is no longer under my protection. Whatever debts remain, they can collect themselves."
Serena’s screams echoed off the marble as Gabriel turned his back and walked out into the misty night.
