Chapter 5

The limousine slammed to a halt, its heavy tires crushing broken glass and discarded needles scattered across the alleyway. The South District was a rotting wound of the city, dominated by rusted iron frameworks and decaying brick. Before them stood the old textile warehouse, its massive, reinforced doors chained shut. The rain poured down in sheets, washing away the last remnants of the gala's golden illusion.

Gabriel stepped out into the downpour, unbuttoning his suit jacket. From the shadows of the surrounding alleys, four sleek black SUVs rolled into position. A dozen men in dark coats stepped out, moving with the terrifying, synchronized silence of professional killers. They did not need orders. Two men approached the chained doors with heavy bolt cutters, snapping the thick steel with a sharp crack that echoed into the night.

"Stay behind me," Gabriel ordered, glancing back at Rose who was sheltering Martha under an umbrella.

Gabriel pushed the heavy doors open. The inside of the warehouse was cavernous, freezing, and plunged in near-total darkness. The smell of mildew and damp concrete was overwhelming. As his men clicked on high-powered tactical flashlights, the beams of white light swept across the massive floor, finally illuminating a huddled mass in the far corner.

Over thirty children, ranging from toddlers to teenagers, were clustered together on the freezing concrete, shivering under a few filthy tarp covers. When the lights hit them, several of the older children screamed, throwing their arms up to shield the younger ones.

"Flashlights down!" Gabriel barked, his voice echoing fiercely off the high ceiling. "Point them at the floor!"

The blinding lights instantly dropped. Gabriel walked slowly toward the terrified group, crouching down as he approached. He took the small, woven basket of bread from Martha, who had hurried up behind him, weeping openly at the sight of the children.

"It's okay," Gabriel said, his low voice softer than anyone in the underworld had ever heard it. "I’m a friend of Martha’s. We brought dinner."

A young boy, no older than eight, with dirt smeared across his cheeks and terrified, wide eyes, crept forward. He looked at the bread, then up at the towering man in the tailored suit. Gabriel broke a piece of the warm bread and handed it to him. The boy devoured it instantly.

"Are you the man who pays for our school?" a teenage girl asked, her voice shaking violently as she clutched a shivering toddler to her chest.

"I am," Gabriel answered, his jaw tightening as he looked at the squalid conditions. "And I am getting you out of here."

"You shouldn't be here," the girl whispered, her eyes darting toward the shadows of the upper catwalks. "The men who brought us... they said they were waiting for someone named Mercer. They said he would come."

A metallic click echoed from the darkness above. Gabriel didn't even look up. He simply dropped the bread basket and drew the heavy firearm from his shoulder holster in one fluid, blindingly fast motion.

"Ambush," Gabriel stated coldly. "Kill them all."
