Chapter 5

Emma had another drawing.

Then another.

Seven total.

Sarah found them hidden inside a toy chest.

In one, David stood beside a black square.

In another, Margaret pointed toward Sarah while Emma sat under a table.

One drawing showed Sarah with something red near her wrist.

Not blood.

A bracelet.

I recognized it.

A pearl bracelet Margaret gave Sarah on her wedding day.

“Where is it?”

Sarah looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

Emma answered.

“Grandma took it.”

“Why?”

“Mommy didn’t listen.”

I looked at Sarah.

Her face changed.

Memory.

Three months earlier, Margaret demanded Sarah attend a Mercer dinner despite Emma having a fever.

Sarah refused.

Margaret took the bracelet back and said family gifts belonged to women who respected family obligations.

Small control.

Symbolic.

Useful.

“What else does she take?”

Sarah looked embarrassed.

“The car sometimes.”

“Your car?”

“It’s registered through Mercer.”

I felt something cold settle in me.

“What happens then?”

“I stay home.”

No bruises required.

Remove transportation.

Jewelry.

Money access.

Staff.

A person can be controlled through ordinary things long before anyone uses fists.

“And David?”

“He says his mother overreacts.”

“But doesn’t stop her.”

“No.”

Because Margaret was useful.

She performed discipline.

David got obedience without always being the villain.

Until he stopped outsourcing it and shoved Sarah himself.

I looked at Emma’s drawings again.

Children notice patterns adults train themselves to minimize.

She had watched.

Stored.

May you like

Translated violence into crayons because no one asked her for testimony.

One purple stick figure on the floor carried more truth than a year of adult explanations.
