Chapter 14

Margaret asked to apologize.
Sarah said no.
Then three months later, yes.
Her timing.
They met in my library.
I stayed because Sarah wanted me there.
Margaret began badly.
“I only wanted what was best for David.”
Sarah stopped her.
“I’m not David.”
Silence.
Good.
Margaret tried again.
“I thought if you supported him more—”
“No.”
Sarah’s voice stayed calm.
“Apologize for what you did to me.”
That was harder.
Margaret’s face changed.
She had lived her entire life through relational justification.
For my son.
For the family.
For peace.
Sarah forced her into first person.
“I told you to lie.”
“Yes.”
“I made you feel responsible for his temper.”
“Yes.”
“I kept Emma quiet.”
Sarah’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
“I was wrong.”
There.
No grand redemption.
No hug.
Sarah nodded.
“Thank you.”
Margaret looked toward the door.
“And Emma?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Margaret’s face fell.
Sarah continued.
“You do not get access to her because you apologized to me.”
Good.
Different relationships.
Different harms.
Different repair.
Margaret left without seeing her granddaughter.
That was the correct consequence.
