Chapter 1

“Tomorrow, I’ll tell everyone you went missing.”

I looked directly at David when I said it.

He went pale beneath the overturned whiskey trolley.

The room was silent except for Sarah trying not to cry.

That sound brought me back to what mattered.

I turned away from David and crossed the dining salon.

My daughter was still on the rug with one hand gripping her right leg. Emma stood several feet away, frozen after watching Margaret reach for her.

I crouched beside Sarah.

“Can you move your foot?”

She nodded.

Barely.

Pain crossed her face.

“Don’t.”

I looked at one of my men.

“Doctor.”

He moved immediately.

Sarah grabbed my wrist.

“Dad…”

Her eyes went toward David.

Again.

Even after he shoved her hard enough to leave her on the floor, she checked his face before speaking.

I hated that more than the broken furniture.

“How long?”

She frowned.

“How long has he been putting his hands on you?”

David forced himself upright.

“She slipped.”

I slowly turned my head.

Emma shouted through tears:

“No! Daddy pushed Mommy!”

Margaret dragged herself free of the fallen coats.

“She’s three. She doesn’t understand what she saw.”

I looked at her.

“You understood.”

Her expression tightened.

“You told Sarah to say she slipped before anyone even asked what happened.”

Silence.

That was the first crack.

Not David’s violence.

Margaret’s preparedness.

She had a lie ready before Sarah stopped screaming.

I looked back at my daughter.

“How many times?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

David whispered:

“Don’t.”

My bodyguards moved before I did.

Two stepped between him and Sarah.

That single word told me enough.

Not first time.

Not accident.

Routine.

Then Emma walked toward me holding something small in her fist.

A folded cocktail napkin.

On it, drawn in purple crayon, were four stick figures.

Mommy.

Emma.

Daddy.

Grandma.

Daddy’s figure had one arm raised.

Mommy was drawn on the floor.

My granddaughter had already been documenting what adults expected her to forget.
