Chapter 4

Margaret had been building the lie for months.

I learned that from estate staff.

Sarah broke glasses.

Sarah tripped.

Sarah bruised easily.

Sarah became emotional.

Sarah forgot conversations.

Small statements.

Never enough to trigger concern alone.

Enough to create a picture.

I called Mrs. Alvarez, one of my longtime housekeepers.

She looked terrified.

“Did Margaret ever speak to you about Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That Mrs. Mercer had become overwhelmed.”

“Overwhelmed by what?”

“Motherhood. Marriage. Family expectations.”

Reasonable words.

Poisoned purpose.

“Did Sarah ever seem confused?”

“No.”

“Did she fall often?”

Mrs. Alvarez hesitated.

“I saw bruises.”

“How many times?”

“Four.”

My hands tightened.

“Did you ask?”

“Once.”

“And?”

“She said she bumped into furniture.”

Of course.

“Did you believe her?”

Mrs. Alvarez looked ashamed.

“No.”

That answer hurt.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“Mrs. Margaret said you knew.”

Again.

Always my name.

Always borrowed authority.

“What exactly?”

“That you agreed Sarah needed privacy and that anyone interfering would lose their position.”

I closed my eyes.

I had never said that.

But it sounded plausible enough.

I valued family privacy.

I hated household gossip.

Everyone knew it.

Margaret took one real trait and sharpened it into a weapon.

When I opened my eyes, Mrs. Alvarez was crying.

“You didn’t fail her alone.”

She looked up.

“I built a house where people feared bringing me ugly truths.”

That belonged to me.

Not David’s shove.

Not Margaret’s lie.

But the silence around them had grown inside my structure.

I could punish Mercer.

I also had to change DeLuca.
