Chapter 15

Beatrice changed slower.
Maybe because age makes identity harder to separate from habit.
She apologized to Sofia first.
Badly.
Then better.
She apologized to Clara.
Clara accepted the words.
Not access.
Important.
Ruby remained distant.
Beatrice hated that.
“She used to run to me.”
Clara answered:
“She saw you help protect Warren.”
Beatrice cried.
Maybe genuine.
Still consequence.
Months later, Ruby asked why Beatrice no longer came to family lunches.
Clara told her:
“Because she made unsafe choices.”
Ruby thought.
“Forever?”
“No.”
Good answer.
Not promise.
Not threat.
Later Beatrice asked me:
“Do you think Clara will forgive me?”
I shrugged.
“Maybe.”
“And Ruby?”
“Maybe.”
She stared.
“That’s all?”
“Yes.”
Powerful families hate maybe.
We prefer guarantees.
Loyalty guaranteed.
Access guaranteed.
Forgiveness guaranteed.
Life does not work that way.

Beatrice would have to change without knowing whether the reward was restoration.
That was the only change worth trusting.
