Chapter 11

Beatrice asked to see Ruby.
I said no.
Then corrected myself.
“Clara decides.”
Important.
Ruby was Clara’s daughter.
Grandfather was not another word for owner.
Clara said no.
Immediate.
Beatrice looked offended.
“I would never hurt that child.”
Clara stared at her.
“You grabbed me while your son shoved her.”
“I was trying to calm things.”
“No.”
My daughter’s voice stayed low.
“You were trying to control who reached Warren.”
Beatrice’s face hardened.
“I’ve known you since you were born.”
Clara nodded.
“And that is why you thought I’d obey you.”
Silence.
Good.
The wedding had exposed more than one old hierarchy.
Beatrice treated younger women as extensions of older family authority.
Clara had tolerated it for years.
Seating choices.
Childcare opinions.
Dress criticism.
Small things.
Normal enough to ignore.
Then Beatrice put hands on her while Ruby cried.
Boundary became visible.
“You do not touch my daughter.”
Beatrice looked at me.
I said nothing.
Her fight was with Clara.
That mattered.
Clara continued.
“You do not correct her. You do not take her anywhere. You do not speak to her unless I am present.”
Beatrice looked shocked.
Not because the terms were extreme.
Because Clara had spoken them without asking me first.
Good.
My daughter was twenty-seven.
She did not need her father to authorize motherhood.
Beatrice left furious.
Clara exhaled.
Then looked at me.
“You were going to say something.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“I forgot.”
May you like
She smiled.
Correct answer.
