Chapter 1

“Show me what you put on her plate.”

I did not raise my voice.

I did not need to.

Warren stood several feet away, breathing hard after I drove the oak presentation board into his upper body. Beatrice had stopped moving entirely.

Ruby was behind me with Clara, crying into her mother’s shoulder.

The bride’s dessert plate remained untouched on the serving table.

Perfect.

Whatever Warren had done, nobody had consumed it yet.

The security manager held out the tablet.

“I have the corridor camera.”

Warren’s expression changed.

That mattered more than any denial.

“Play it.”

The footage showed the serving table from above.

Guests moving.

Staff crossing.

Then Warren.

He waited until the pastry attendant turned away.

His hand moved over the bride’s plate.

Something small fell from between his fingers.

Powder.

Then he covered it with icing from the edge of the dessert.

Beatrice whispered:

“This proves nothing.”

I looked at her.

Nobody had asked.

The security manager zoomed in.

Warren’s cuff moved back.

A small folded packet appeared in his palm.

Clara went still.

Ruby lifted her face from her mother’s shoulder.

“That.”

I turned toward my granddaughter.

“That what?”

“The little paper.”

Warren snapped:

“She doesn’t know what she saw.”

Ruby immediately hid against Clara again.

I looked at Warren.

“You shoved a three-year-old into a cake because she saw your hand over that plate.”

“It wasn’t because of that.”

Wrong answer.

I took one step closer.

“Then tell me why.”

Silence.

Beatrice looked toward the ballroom doors.

Not toward her son.

Toward escape.

That was when I understood something important.

Warren had tampered with the plate.

May you like

But Beatrice had been expecting something to happen after the bride ate it.

And whatever they planned had not ended with dessert.
