Chapter 9

The charity route had moved Ruby out of the hospital.
That was the next layer.
Not through secret tunnels.
Not through some theatrical convoy.
Through a delivery van carrying donated blankets and newborn supplies from the Blackwood Foundation.
Ordinary.
Invisible.
Exactly Claudia’s style.
The driver was still employed.
Henry Cole.
Sixty.
He came to me voluntarily when he heard June had spoken.
“I’ve been waiting for this.”
I stared.
“For three years?”
He lowered his eyes.
Fair.
“What were you told?”
“That the Blackwood baby was being moved because of a threat.”
Same story.
“Where did you take her?”
“To Elena’s apartment.”
“Did you know who she was?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you realize?”
He looked toward Ruby playing in the garden.
“About a year later.”
My jaw tightened.
“How?”
“Mrs. Claudia started sending me to photograph the child.”
There.
Another man turned into a watcher.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Henry’s eyes filled.
“She said the threat still existed.”
“Did you believe her?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
Silence.
That was the answer.
Fear becomes complicity when people keep choosing it after the lie stops making sense.
I did not shout.
“What did she threaten?”
“My son’s job.”
Of course.
Claudia’s favorite language.
Housing.
Employment.
Access.
Never dramatic enough to look like violence.
Powerful enough to silence.
Henry gave me one important truth.
Two months after Ruby’s birth, Claudia had planned to move Elena and the baby out of state.
Why?
Because I started recovering.
I had returned to meetings.
Asked about reopening Lydia’s rooms.
Once, I apparently walked past Elena carrying Ruby and stopped.
Henry remembered.
I did too.
A baby wrapped in pink.
A strange ache in my chest.
Claudia entered the hallway and sent Elena away before I could ask anything.
That night, she ordered the move.
Elena refused.
“I didn’t know that,” I said.
Henry nodded.
“Elena said Ruby had already lost enough.”
I looked toward her.
She had fought Claudia without even knowing what she was protecting.
The move never happened because Elena threatened to resign and take Ruby beyond Blackwood property herself.
Claudia backed down.
Not mercy.
Risk.
A child far away could become harder to monitor.

So she kept them close.
My daughter grew up on my estate because proximity was easier to control than disappearance.
