Chapter 13

Claudia tried apologizing to Ruby.
I stopped her.
Not because she did not owe one.
Because Ruby was three.
Adult remorse is heavy.
Children should not have to carry it to make adults feel forgiven.
“You apologize later,” I said.
Claudia stared.
“When?”
“When she understands what you’re apologizing for.”
“What if she hates me?”
I looked at her.
“That is not your decision either.”
She flinched.
Good.
The pattern had to break everywhere.
Instead, Claudia apologized to Elena.
That was harder.
They met in the old staff dining room.
Elena chose the location.
I understood why.
For years Claudia had sat at the head of estate operations while Elena entered through service doors.
Now there was no hierarchy in the room.
Claudia began badly.
“I thought I was protecting—”
Elena held up one hand.
“No.”
My sister stopped.
Elena’s voice stayed quiet.
“You do not get to call what happened to my baby protection.”
Silence.
Claudia looked down.
Good.
Try again.
“I lied to you.”
“Yes.”
“I let you believe Ruby was biologically yours.”
“Yes.”
“I threatened your home when you got too close to the blanket.”
“Yes.”
Claudia began crying.
Elena did not comfort her.
Good.
Finally:
“I’m sorry.”
Elena nodded.
Not forgiveness.
Receipt.
Then she said something that hurt everyone.
“You gave me the greatest love of my life through the worst lie of mine.”
Claudia covered her mouth.
Elena looked toward the doorway where Ruby was laughing with Nora.
“I will never wish Ruby hadn’t come to me.”
Pause.
“I will always wish you had not stolen the truth.”
That was the contradiction we all had to live with.
No neat ending could erase it.
If Claudia had not done something monstrous, Elena would never have raised Ruby.
Love had grown inside theft.
May you like
That did not make the theft good.
It made the consequences human.
