Chapter 16

Claudia left the main estate.

Her choice, eventually.

At first she stayed in the west wing and moved through the house like someone haunting her own former authority.

Nobody asked her for schedules.

Nobody needed her signature.

Staff did not stand when she entered.

She hated it.

Then perhaps understood something.

Dependence had been her proof of love.

When it disappeared, she felt abandoned.

One evening she came to my study.

“No ring?”

I looked up.

She was staring at the family administrator ring she used to wear.

It sat inside my drawer.

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Not that one.”

She nodded.

Then looked at Lydia’s photograph.

“I envied her.”

I waited.

“She could walk into a room and you listened.”

“That bothered you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claudia smiled sadly.

“Because you used to listen to me.”

There.

The smallest motive under the biggest crime.

Replacement.

She experienced my marriage as loss of influence.

Lydia did not steal anything.

I grew up.

Built another relationship.

Claudia interpreted it as demotion.

Then Emma was born.

Another person I would love more instinctively than I loved being advised.

My sister feared becoming unnecessary.

So she made herself essential by manufacturing my grief.

Understanding did not soften the consequence.

But it made the tragedy uglier.

“You could have been her aunt.”

Claudia looked down.

“I know.”

“You could have watched her grow without hiding behind trees.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You chose control over closeness.”

“Yes.”

That was the cleanest confession she ever gave me.

She left for a smaller Blackwood property the next morning.

No staff to command beyond two people she hired herself.

No charity authority.

No household power.

I did not cut her off financially.

I did cut her off from Ruby.

For now.

Maybe one day Ruby would choose differently.

That decision would belong to Ruby.

Not me.

May you like

Not Claudia.

For once, my sister would have to live without deciding the ending.
