Chapter 8

Now, only Warren Hale remained.

The sixty-six-year-old patriarch sat slumped in the mahogany chair, stripped of his son, stripped of his alliance, and stripped of his empire. The afternoon sun had climbed higher, casting long, geometric shadows of the conservatory lattice across his face.

"And me, Giulietta?" Warren rasped, his voice sounding older, hollowed out by defeat. "Do you put me on the loading docks too?"

"No, Warren," Giulietta said softly, walking over to the marble altar. She picked up a heavy fountain pen and a three-page document that had been resting beneath the orchid garland.

She walked back and dropped the document onto his lap.

"What is this?" Warren asked, squinting at the legal text.

"That is a complete, irrevocable deed of transfer for your private estate in Vermont," Giulietta explained, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "Along with an admission of civil liability for the embezzlement of the union pension funds. You will sign every single line."

Warren looked up, his bloodshot eyes narrowing. "And if I refuse? You'll shoot me right here?"

"If you refuse," Giulietta whispered, leaning down until her breath brushed his ear, "I will hand the forensic files regarding your late wife's 'accidental' death in the asylum directly to the federal attorney general. You will spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security penitentiary in Colorado, dying in an eight-by-ten concrete box while your former associates divide your scraps."

Warren’s hands began to shake violently. The mention of his late wife’s death stripped away the last remaining fortress of his defense.

"You... you found the medical logs from Vermont?" he whispered, his voice cracking into a dry wheeze.

"I found the doctor you paid twenty thousand dollars to alter the toxicology report, Warren," Giulietta murmured. "He was remarkably cooperative once Silvio paid his clinic a visit."

Warren looked down at the document. A single tear of bitter, humiliated defeat dripped onto the cream parchment.

With trembling fingers, the old man picked up the fountain pen. He signed his name on the designated lines, the gold nib scratching harshly against the paper, sealing the total annihilation of the Hale dynasty.

Giulietta took the signed document, blew lightly on the wet ink, and handed it to Silvio.

"Escort Mr. Hale to the transport van," Giulietta ordered, not sparing a backward glance at the broken patriarch. "Drive him to the estate in Vermont. Strip his communications, cut the landlines, and station four guards at the gate. He does not leave the property boundaries. If he sets foot beyond the fence, handle it permanently."

"Understood, Donna Giulietta," Silvio replied.

Two guards seized Warren by the elbows, hauling him to his feet. The old man didn't fight back; he let himself be dragged across the stone floor like a hollow ghost, his dress shoes dragging through the white orchid petals until the doors clicked shut behind him.

The vast conservatory fell into an absolute, ringing silence.

Giulietta stood alone beneath the soaring glass domes, bathed in the brilliant white sunlight. She reached up, gently unclasping her heavy diamond earrings, dropping them into her palm. She looked down at her luxurious bridal gown—spotless, pristine, and victorious.
