Chapter 1

The private bridal suite of the Hale estate was drenched in brilliant, golden morning light that poured through arched French windows, illuminating towering displays of white hydrangeas, crystal chandeliers, and an antique vanity carved from polished ivory wood. Outside, across the sunlit terrace, three hundred high-society guests in tailored tuxedos and pastel gowns were assembling for what the city had crowned the wedding of the century.

Inside, the heavy oak door clicked shut with an ominous, mechanical snap.

Preston Hale turned the brass deadbolt, his knuckles whitening as the lock settled into place. At thirty-nine, he carried himself with the bloated entitlement of inherited empire. His tailored wedding trousers were pressed to a knife-edge, his Italian dress shirt unbuttoned at the throat, his platinum Patek Philippe glinting under the chandelier. In his right hand, he casually rested a heavy, steel-headed driver—a golf club he had pulled from his bag in the adjoining dressing room.

He took two slow, measured strides across the Persian rug, trapping twenty-five-year-old Giulietta Marconi against the beveled glass of the vanity.

Giulietta looked breathtaking. Her hand-sewn gown was an architectural masterpiece of French lace and silk, clinging to a lean, commanding silhouette. Flawless diamond drops hung from her ears, and her fair, rosy cheeks held a flush of natural color that no cosmetic powder could replicate.

Preston raised the metal club, tapping the polished head against the palm of his left hand with rhythmic, sickening thuds.

"You made a mistake at breakfast, Giulietta," Preston said, his American drawl thick with arrogant condescension. "Telling my cousins that the Marconi logistics firm wouldn't sign over the northern berths before the vows were read."

Giulietta did not step backward. Her spine remained rigid as her cold hazel eyes locked onto his face. "The northern berths belong to my bloodline, Preston. They are not part of your family's dowry."

"Everything you touch is about to become mine," Preston sneered, stepping closer until the metallic head of the club hovered inches from her throat. His lips twisted into a mocking, vicious grin. “This is how my father taught my mother to obey.”

For half a second, the room fell dead silent.

Then, every trace of bridal apprehension melted from Giulietta’s face, replaced by an arctic, terrifying stillness.

Slowly, without breaking eye contact, Giulietta lifted her left hand. Her slender fingers closed around the eight-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring resting on her finger. With effortless poise, she twisted the platinum band off her knuckle and set it down onto the glass surface of the vanity with a sharp, dismissive clink.

She looked up, her gaze carving into Preston like a razor.

“Then he raised the wrong son,” Giulietta said, her voice dropping into an ice-cold register.

Preston’s eyes flared with volatile fury. "You disrespectful little bitch—"

He swung the golf club with full force, aiming a vicious horizontal strike straight for her ribs.

Giulietta didn't flinch. She pivoted on her four-inch satin heels, slipping effortlessly beneath the arc of the swing. The displaced air brushed harmlessly against her lace bodice. Before Preston could reset his balance, Giulietta’s right hand shot out like an iron clamp, seizing his wrist while her left drove into the crook of his elbow with bone-cracking leverage.

Preston gasped as the joint buckled. With a sharp, fluid twist, Giulietta stripped the heavy metal club cleanly from his grip. In the same motion, she planted her palm against his chest and drove him backward with devastating kinetic force.

Preston flew across the rug, crashing hard onto the velvet settee, the breath tearing from his lungs as the furniture slid against the baseboard.
