Chapter 4

With a slow, deliberate turn of his head, Adrian shifted his gaze to the terrified young woman standing beside him. He assessed Lena’s exhausted posture, the deep creases in her uniform, the sheer terror radiating from her delicate frame, and her rigid posture beneath the tulle veil.

Adrian slowly raised his head and met Lena’s eyes.

The quiet, unspoken mutual affection that existed between them—a fragile, dangerous secret hidden in plain sight—ignited instantly in the space between them. Lena held his gaze, finding an anchor of absolute safety in his unblinking stare.

Adrian finally turned his head toward Yvette. The movement was deliberate and terrifying.

Yvette looked directly at Adrian, her panic palpable beneath her emerald satin gown. She stood tall, desperate to salvage the situation.

"Children love weddings, darling," Yvette said, her voice smooth and dripping with a condescending, dismissive sweetness, attempting to project the image of a reasonable aristocrat managing a household event. "He is just excited for the maid."

The lie hung in the bright, luminous air, heavy and desperate.

Adrian did not flinch. His broad shoulders remained perfectly still beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He didn't yell. He didn't immediately move toward Yvette.

Instead, he held her gaze. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular face was suffocating. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.

Every single guest in the ballroom stopped speaking and turned entirely toward Adrian, waiting to see if the king would side with his future bride or the housemaid.

"Lena," Adrian said.

His deep, low voice dropped a full octave, echoing powerfully across the polished marble floors. The sound was not a shout, but the absolute gravity of his tone commanded immediate, total obedience.

"Did you choose this?" Adrian asked.

The question was a lethal inquiry, a surgical strike that bypassed the petty household politics and targeted the unforgivable sin of forcing the innocent.

Lena steadied a trembling breath. She looked down at Oliver, who was looking up at her with wide, confused eyes, still holding the small flower basket in his hands. She looked back up at the terrifying mafia boss, laying her absolute ruin bare for him to see.

"No," Lena whispered, the tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Yvette arranged everything."

The collective gasp from the surrounding velvet sofas was audible. The psychological torture Yvette had just inflicted upon a vulnerable woman was so monstrous, so completely devoid of humanity, that even the mafia capos looked away in disgust. To sell a member of the boss's household was an act of treason.

Adrian’s broad shoulders went completely rigid. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fingers curled into fists. He stared at the emerald satin gown, the horrific reality of his fiancée's cruelty locking into his mind with terrifying precision.

Yvette’s polished smile tightened significantly, the corners of her mouth straining. She looked directly at Adrian. She chose to double down, speaking as though settling an ordinary household expense rather than human trafficking.

"The groom already paid, darling," Yvette stated, her voice cold and unyielding.

The admission sealed her fate.

Adrian moved with incredibly gentle, deliberate care. He reached out and gently lifted the veil from Lena’s ruffled maid headband. He turned and placed the delicate tulle directly into Yvette’s waiting hands.

Oliver, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere and the disappearance of the 'happy surprise,' slid off his footstool. The little boy took Lena’s free hand, his small fingers wrapping securely around her trembling ones, seeking comfort.

Adrian shifted his stance. He stepped deliberately between Yvette and Lena, positioning his body as an impenetrable wall of dark wool and muscle to shield the housemaid, keeping Oliver safely beside him.

He looked down at Yvette. His sharply defined jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held a cold, unwavering stare.

Yvette’s smile disappeared completely. She looked down at the veil in her hands, realizing she was entirely trapped. The sequence ended in profound, terrifying silence.
