Chapter 2

Weaving through the crowded room was six-year-old Oliver, Adrian’s son. Dressed in a sharp charcoal suit and a burgundy bow tie, the little boy was a bright spark of genuine innocence in a room full of predators. He ran toward the low worktable where the staff was meticulously arranging the final gifts. In his small hands, he carefully held a small woven basket filled with paper flower petals.

Standing near the table was Lena Harper. At twenty-five, the housemaid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty with delicate features, clear skin, and bright, incredibly expressive eyes. But tonight, she looked completely shattered. Her fitted black maid dress was deeply creased. Her pristine white apron was rumpled. Her dark hair was disheveled, with loose strands falling around her face, and her white ruffled maid headband sat askew. Lena moved with a vulnerable, exhausted manner, her hands trembling slightly as she worked.

"Lena, ensure the ribbons on that box are perfectly crisp," hissed Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, walking past the worktable. "Miss Shaw is watching. She will have you thrown out into the snow if it isn't perfect."

"I... I am trying, Mrs. Gable," Lena whispered, her voice cracking.

"You have to survive tonight, child," the older woman pleaded, giving her a gentle, sympathetic look. "Just wrap the gifts and keep your head down."

Lena took a shuddering breath, focusing entirely on the task at hand to keep her hands from visibly shaking. During Adrian's absence, Yvette had effectively taken over the household. With terrifying, methodical cruelty, the fiancée had forced Lena into an inescapable trap. Yvette had arranged a marriage between Lena and a wealthy, much older acquaintance of the Shaw family. Yvette had accepted a massive sum of money from the groom in exchange for arranging the wedding, fully intending to remove the beloved maid from Adrian’s household forever. Yvette had threatened Lena's family, forcing the young woman into silent compliance.

"Are you almost ready, Mommy?" Oliver asked, swinging his legs as he climbed onto a small footstool beside her. The boy affectionately called her Mommy, a title that infuriated Yvette but warmed Lena's broken heart.

"Almost, sweetie," Lena replied, forcing a small, tired smile. Oliver had been told by Yvette that a lovely Christmas wedding was being organized, completely unaware of the horror it entailed.

Suddenly, the scent of expensive perfume washed over the table. Yvette Shaw glided into the immediate, bright circle of the worktable, completely bypassing the capos and politicians. She held a delicate, short bridal veil made of expensive tulle.

Lena froze, her hands hovering above a gift box. She didn't dare look up.

Yvette didn't speak initially. She moved with vicious, calculated speed. She reached out and abruptly placed the short bridal veil directly over Lena’s ruffled maid headband, adjusting the tulle to fall over the girl's disheveled hair.

Lena gasped, stumbling backward slightly as the invasive movement startled her. Her fingers tightened desperately against the rumpled fabric of her white apron.

With a triumphant, theatrical flourish, Yvette stepped back to admire her work. She looked directly at Lena, her polished public smile twisting into a small, commanding, and utterly cruel smirk.

"A bride should look grateful," Yvette announced, her voice pitching just loud enough to cut through the ambient noise of the immediate area.

The sheer cruelty of the statement made several nearby guests pause. Silas halted his champagne glass halfway to his mouth. The senator's wife gasped softly, turning her head. The implication was horrific—a maid being paraded as a possession in the middle of a festive gathering.
