Chapter 3

The air around the low worktable grew suffocatingly thick. The festive melodies of the string quartet playing in the corner seemed to fade into a dull buzz. Lena’s hands became perfectly still against her apron, her knuckles turning white. Her breath hitched in her throat, a ragged, painful sound.

She looked at the delicate veil hanging over her eyes, the physical manifestation of her stolen future, and the horrific reality of the transaction crashed over her. Yvette had not merely arranged a marriage; she had sold a human being to the highest bidder to eliminate a perceived rival for Oliver's affections.

The color vanished entirely from Lena’s fair, rosy skin. She felt the heavy, scrutinizing stares of the mafia guests burning into her back.

Before the guards could intervene, a small, excited voice broke the terrible silence.

Oliver, sitting on his plush footstool in his charcoal suit and burgundy bow tie, had stopped swinging his legs. The six-year-old boy recognized the bridal veil. He didn't understand the accusation or the danger. He only knew that the secret plan was finally happening.

Oliver lifted the little flower basket filled with paper petals and looked excitedly at Yvette, his young face lighting up with absolute, innocent joy.

"Auntie, can I carry Mommy’s flowers?" Oliver asked cheerfully.

The child’s quiet question hung in the air, a stark contrast to the surrounding conversations about real estate and political maneuvering. The words fell into the opulent ballroom like a lit match into a powder keg.

The immediate vicinity froze. The absolute, terrifying tension radiating from the revelation infected the room instantly. Like a ripple across a dark pond, the shockwave spread outward. Every single guest at the nearby velvet sofas stopped eating. They stopped speaking. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads in unison, their attention snapping entirely toward the little boy, the housemaid, and the mafia boss's fiancée.

The sheer, innocent certainty in Oliver’s voice stripped away every layer of sophisticated deniability. Yvette Shaw had not merely set a trap; she had manipulated a six-year-old boy into participating in the sale of the woman he loved as a mother.

Yvette’s polished smile briefly faltered, collapsing into a grimace of pure, unadulterated panic. She took a sharp, shallow breath, realizing her perfect plan had just been detonated by the very child she was trying to manipulate.

With visible, agonizing effort, Yvette forced the corners of her mouth back up, attempting to restore the smile, though it now looked more like a death mask under the cinematic lighting. She turned her head, desperately scanning the room for Adrian, hoping to intercept the narrative before the situation spiraled completely out of her control.

Adrian Westbrook had just finished greeting a group of international buyers near the grand entrance. His situational awareness was legendary among the syndicates, and the sudden, breathless silence in the center of the room immediately caught his attention.

He moved with deliberate, terrifying slowness, his broad shoulders cutting a path through the frozen guests. He bypassed his senior capos and walked directly toward the low worktable.

Adrian stopped right beside Lena. His towering, masculine frame completely dominated the space, casting a long shadow in the golden light. He didn't look at Yvette immediately. His cold, observant eyes took in the scene: the trembling housemaid, the smiling child, and the ridiculous bridal veil sitting askew on the maid's headband.

He looked first at the six-year-old boy. Oliver was still beaming, entirely oblivious to the lethal tension vibrating through the room, proud of his role in the 'surprise'.
