Chapter 4

The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty crystal wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt like a gilded execution chamber.

Colette backed away from the head table, her heels clicking unsteadily against the polished floor. She wrapped her arms around her waist, a defensive posture that crushed the sculpted satin of her expensive gown. Her diamond earrings shook as she wept, her carefully constructed facade entirely destroyed.

"Archer, you cannot do this," Colette pleaded, her voice cracking. "My family arranged this marriage! We are supposed to unite our syndicates! Are you going to throw all of that away because of a senile old woman and a servant?"

Archer stood immovably in his tailored dark three-piece suit. He slowly crouched down, bringing his handsome, angular face level with his mother’s.

"Mother, why did you keep this abuse a secret from me?" Archer asked gently, his deep voice softening significantly to comfort the elderly woman.

Evelyn looked at her son, her eyes filled with a mixture of profound relief and lingering shame. "I didn't want to ruin your merger, Archer. She told me that if I complained, you would lose the Sterling family's support. She said I was a burden you were too polite to discard."

Archer rose slowly to his full height. He turned his broad, powerful shoulders toward his fiancée. The extremely short stubble on his jawline seemed to bristle with barely contained violence.

"Did you truly believe you could isolate the woman who gave me life?" Archer asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. His polished leather shoes clicked ominously against the floor.

"I am your fiancée!" Colette shrieked, tears of desperate rage filling her eyes. "I love you! I did it for us! I was trying to prepare this house for our future!"

"Can a future exist where cruelty is the foundation?" Archer asked.

He didn't wait for her answer. He reached across the table, his eyes locked onto her trembling hands.

"Will you remove the ring, Colette, or must I have my men cut it from your hand?" Archer asked, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal whisper.

Colette gasped, her fair skin turning entirely translucent. She clutched her left hand to her chest, protecting the massive diamond engagement ring. "No. No, Archer, please. We can fix this. I will apologize to her! I will pay the maid double her wages!"

"Can money repair the indignity of a mother forced to beg for bread?" Archer asked. "Will you remove the ring?"

Trembling violently, completely stripped of her power and her future, Colette ripped the heavy diamond engagement ring from her finger. She threw it fiercely onto the white damask table. It struck a crystal wine glass with a sharp crack, spinning out of control before coming to rest near a flickering ivory candle.

"My father will kill you for this!" Colette spat, her rosy skin mottled with red, furious blotches. "He controls the northern ports! He will burn your empire to the ground for humiliating me!"

"Has any man who declared war on me lived long enough to see the ashes?" Archer asked smoothly, his cold, perceptive eyes completely devoid of warmth.

He reached into his jacket and retrieved a sleek, encrypted smartphone. He pressed a single button, raising the phone to his ear. The small neck tattoo shifted seamlessly with the movement.

"Will you send a security detail to the grand dining room?" Archer asked into the receiver. "Will you ensure Miss Sterling is escorted to the front gates with nothing but the clothes she arrived in?"

May you like

He lowered the phone and looked at the broken socialite one last time.

"Have you finally realized the price of your arrogance, Colette?" Archer asked softly, as the heavy doors of the dining room swung violently open.
