Chapter 2

The deep, quiet resonance of Archer’s question cut through the airy, luminous warmth of the dining hall like a straight razor. Because the mafia boss spoke so rarely, and always in his uniquely calculated, interrogative cadence, the effect on the room was immediate and absolute. Every single guest at the adjacent tables stopped eating. Forks hovered motionless over gold-rimmed porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered silently to the white damask tablecloths. The polite, affluent American accents died in their throats. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the dangerous man direct his cold, perceptive gaze at the housemaid.
Pippa froze, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She was painfully aware of the heavy silence that had descended upon the luxurious room. Her slender fingers curled tightly against the crisp white fabric of her apron.
Colette, sensing the sudden, dangerous shift in the room's atmosphere, looked directly at Archer. She did not flinch, attempting to maintain her high-society composure. She offered a small, dismissive smile that did not quite reach her eyes.
"Kneeling teaches staff some respect," Colette stated, her voice smooth and polished.
A faint, airy laugh escaped Colette’s lips, designed to make the brutal punishment sound like a charming, necessary part of household management. Her eyes searched Archer’s angular face for a sign of approval, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests.
Archer did not return her smile. He remained perfectly still, his tattooed hand still resting near Pippa's elbow, his expression an unreadable mask of cold fury. He stared at his fiancée, offering absolutely no validation. When no approval came, Colette's smile stiffened into a brittle, defensive line. Only after speaking did she shift her gaze, giving Pippa a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent command for the maid to keep her mouth shut.
Pippa felt the heat of Colette's glare, but she could not look away from the towering, masculine presence of the mafia boss. She held Archer’s intense, unyielding gaze. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, making her beautiful, expressive eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers. Her inner brows lifted slightly in a helpless, agonizing gesture of sorrow.
"I fed your mother," Pippa answered.
Her voice was incredibly fragile, almost apologetic, dropping to a gentle whisper. She pressed her lips together tightly afterward, terrified of the consequences of speaking against the future bride of the syndicate leader.
At the sound of Pippa's fragile defense, Evelyn Langford looked up. The seventy-four-year-old woman turned her pale, tear-streaked face away from her untouched plate and looked directly at her son. Her trembling hand stopped entirely beside the silver breadbasket. The deep, agonizing shame that she had carried in silence finally broke her. It drew her mouth into a small, trembling line.
"Colette makes me beg first," Evelyn confessed.
The words emerged quietly, entirely without anger, filled only with the devastating resignation of an abused elder. It was the simple, heartbreaking truth of a mother who had been subjected to horrific cruelty in her own home.

Archer froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His eyes lingered on Evelyn for one silent, agonizing beat as his mother’s words cemented the reality of the torture.
Slowly, terrifyingly, Archer’s eyes shifted. His head followed slightly, tracking across the polished walnut table until his gaze landed squarely on Colette. His sharply defined jaw settled into a firm, unforgiving line. His expression became completely still. He held Colette’s eyes in cold, knowing silence, stripping away her satin gown and her diamonds to expose the monster beneath. Every guest remained entirely attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming tension.
