Chapter 16

The carousel pavilion reopened for Bennett’s fifth birthday.
His choice.
I offered anywhere.
Zoo.
Lake.
Garden.
He chose carousel.
“Boxes?”
He asked.
“No boxes over heads.”
“Good.”
Reasonable event policy.
The carousel moved this time.
Slowly.
Grace rode beside him and complained she was too old.
He told her no.
Apparently age denial is love.
Elias attended.
Not as Mercer.
As Elias.
Bennett knew him now as “Adrian’s dad.”
We had told him about Adrian months earlier.
Basic version.
Adrian was his biological father.
Adrian died before Bennett knew him.
Elias loved Adrian.
No dynasty.
No bloodline speech.
Bennett’s first question had been:
“Did Adrian like dinosaurs?”
Elias answered:
“No. He liked cars.”
Bennett looked disappointed.
Relationship survived.
Troy did not attend.
Neither did Opal or Keira.
That was okay.
Some absences are healthier than symbolic reunions.
At the gift table sat one empty decorative box.
Bennett saw it.
Walked over.
I watched carefully.
He put his toy truck inside.
Closed the lid.
Opened it.
Took the truck out.
Then used the box as a garage.
That was all.
Objects do not keep power unless people keep feeding it.
Later he asked for his crown.
I gave him the blue one he helped make.
He placed it on Elias instead.
“Grandpa.”
Elias froze.
So did I.
Bennett had chosen the word himself.
Elias started crying.
Bennett looked alarmed.
“Bad?”
“No.”
Elias laughed through tears.
“Very good.”
No one announced anything.
No one negotiated terms.
A three-year-old secret had become a five-year-old relationship without a council meeting.
May you like
Silas would have hated it.
Perfect.
