Chapter 15

Silas lost authority slowly.

That hurt him more.

I did not exile him dramatically.

I removed one role at a time.

Succession advice.

Gone.

Household influence.

Gone.

Youth mentorship.

Absolutely gone.

Family finance consultation.

Reduced.

He remained a Caruso elder.

Nothing more.

He called it humiliation.

I called it proportion.

One day he asked:

“What will you tell Bennett about me?”

Interesting question.

“The truth appropriate to his age.”

“That I betrayed you?”

“That you tried to turn his origins into leverage.”

He flinched.

“You make it sound ugly.”

“It was ugly.”

“I was protecting Caruso.”

There it was one final time.

I looked at him.

“No.”

He waited.

“You were protecting a world where men like you mattered because children’s futures needed interpreters.”

Silence.

Without hereditary succession, advisers lost one of their oldest powers.

They could no longer choose which child to flatter for twenty years.

No future Troy-baby plan.

No Bennett-Mercer bridge.

No hidden heir.

Adults would lead based on adulthood.

Simple.

Terrifying.

Silas looked old suddenly.

“What happens when you die?”

“People solve it.”

He almost laughed.

“That’s your plan?”

“Yes.”

“Uncertainty?”

“Responsibility.”

Different.

Then he asked if he could ever see Bennett.

“No.”

Not maybe.

Silas had directly engineered his humiliation.

That boundary was mine.

He nodded once.

No apology.

At least no fake one.

He left.

For the first time since I became head, I did not wonder whether my father would approve.

That was another inheritance ending.
