Chapter 3

The heavy, suffocating tension in that corner of the ballroom was abruptly shattered by a sudden, drastic shift in the room's atmosphere. The ambient chatter of the white American elite died down in waves, starting from the grand entrance and rippling across the massive space. The string quartet playing on the elevated stage faltered, missing several notes before awkwardly fading into silence.

Emily looked past Michael’s broad shoulder. The heavy oak doors of the ballroom had been pushed wide open by two massive bodyguards.

Stepping into the bright, cinematic light of the room was Roland Carter.

At sixty years old, Roland was a monument of raw, terrifying power. He moved with the slow, deliberate grace of an apex predator. He wore a flawless, tailored three-piece suit that accentuated his broad shoulders, paired with a crisp dress shirt and highly polished leather shoes. A heavy gold signet ring rested on his finger, and an expensive wristwatch peeked from beneath his cuff. His fair, rosy skin was lined with decades of ruthless experience, and his eyes possessed a cold, calculating intensity that could freeze the blood of the most hardened criminals. He was a veteran Mafia boss, and the sheer gravity of his presence demanded absolute submission from everyone in the room.

Roland’s sharp gaze swept across the crowded ballroom. The guests—even the high-ranking members of the Hayes family—instinctively stepped back, creating a wide, clear path for him. He was a man who did not tolerate disrespect, and his unexpected arrival at the birthday party immediately set the room on edge.

His eyes locked onto the far side of the room. He saw his beautiful daughter. He saw the cold, greasy stains ruining his granddaughters' dresses. And he saw Michael Hayes gripping Emily’s arm with violent, controlling force while the two little girls cried hysterically beside them.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees. Roland did not run. He walked. Every step he took toward his daughter was a slow, methodical drumbeat of impending doom.

Michael finally noticed the silence in the room. He turned his head, and the arrogant sneer on his face vanished entirely, replaced by a sudden, sickening pallor. His grip on Emily’s arm loosened just a fraction in his shock.

That was all Emily needed. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, she tore her arm free from her husband’s grasp.

She stumbled forward, rushing past Michael and throwing herself into her father’s protective shadow. She pulled the crying Megan and Olivia with her, hiding them behind Roland’s towering frame.

"Emily, what is happening here?" Roland asked. His voice was a deep, gravelly rumble, eerily calm but vibrating with a lethal, barely contained violence.

"Dad..." Emily choked out, her entire body shaking uncontrollably as the years of repressed trauma finally boiled over. She pointed a trembling finger at Jessica, who was still holding the shrimp platter, and then at her husband. "Dad... they treat the girls like servants."
