Chapter 2

The cold, greasy broth dripped steadily from Megan’s pastel dress, splashing onto the polished marble floor. The four-year-old began to cry softly, clutching her younger sister's hand. Olivia was already sobbing, her tiny shoulders shaking as she tried to wipe the oily liquid from her fair skin. The cruelty of the moment was paralyzing, a stark, ugly contrast to the bright, cheerful colors of the ballroom.
"Come here, babies. It's okay. Mommy is right here," Emily whispered, her voice breaking. She dropped to her knees, completely ignoring the risk to her elegant emerald dress. She pulled both crying girls into her arms, using a clean cloth napkin from the table to desperately dab the broth from their faces.
"Let's go," Emily said firmly, standing back up and taking her daughters by their small, trembling hands. "We are leaving this house right now. I am not letting you stay in this room for another second."
She turned to lead Megan and Olivia toward the grand double doors of the ballroom, her heart hammering violently in her chest. She had endured years of emotional abuse and condescension from the Hayes family, suffering in silence to keep the peace between their crime syndicates, but she would never allow her children to become their targets.
Before she could take three steps, a heavy, unyielding hand clamped down hard on her bare arm.
Emily gasped, her momentum completely halted. She was forcefully yanked backward, her high heels skidding slightly on the slick marble floor. She spun around to face her husband.
Michael Hayes stood over her, his thirty-eight-year-old frame imposing and rigid. He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit and a crisp white dress shirt. The heavy gold of his expensive watch and wedding ring gleamed under the chandeliers. His fair, rosy skin was pulled tight over a clenched jaw, and his eyes were devoid of any warmth or husbandly concern. He didn't look at his crying daughters; he only looked at the guests who were beginning to stare.
"Let go of me, Michael," Emily demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and defiance. "Did you see what your mother just did to them?"
"I saw you causing a scene," Michael replied, his voice a cold, terrifying whisper that promised severe consequences behind closed doors. He tightened his grip on her arm, his fingers digging painfully into her flesh.
"She threw garbage on our children!" Emily pleaded, her eyes wide with desperate disbelief. "Your own mother humiliated them in front of everyone! Let me go!"
"Sit down," Michael commanded coldly, forcefully pulling her back toward the family’s reserved banquet table. He leaned in close, his American accent sharp and threatening. "Don't embarrass me in front of my family. You will sit there, and you will smile, and you will teach your daughters how to behave in my house."

"They are babies, Michael!" Emily cried out, trying to pry his thick fingers off her arm.
"They are an embarrassment," Michael hissed, yanking her arm harder. "Now shut your mouth before I make you shut it. Do you understand me, Emily?"
