Chapter 10

Three days into the conflict, the city’s criminal underworld was paralyzed. The Hayes family had suffered catastrophic financial losses, their operations crippled by Roland’s relentless, strategic strikes. Yet, despite the bleeding, Michael had not surrendered.
It was late evening. The bright, vivid colors of the sunset had faded into a deep, oppressive twilight. Inside the Carter estate, the atmosphere was a mixture of extreme vigilance and quiet domesticity.
Emily had just finished reading a bedtime story to Megan and Olivia. The two little girls were fast asleep in a massive, fortified bedroom, their traumatic memories of the birthday party slowly fading under the safety of their grandfather’s roof. Emily kissed their foreheads, turned on the nightlight, and gently closed the heavy oak door.
She walked down the grand, sweeping staircase toward Roland’s study. The house was unnervingly quiet. The usual bustle of the guards outside seemed muffled.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, the massive front doors of the estate suddenly shuddered.
It wasn't a knock. It was a heavy, violent thud, as if something incredibly dense had been thrown against the reinforced wood.
Emily froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She looked toward the foyer. The two armed guards stationed inside the hall instantly drew their weapons, aiming directly at the heavy double doors.
"Boss!" one of the guards yelled, not taking his eyes off the entrance.
Roland emerged from his study immediately, his suit jacket discarded, a heavy, customized handgun already gripped firmly in his right hand. He moved with absolute, terrifying speed, stepping in front of Emily to shield her.
"What is it?" Roland demanded, his American accent sharp and commanding.
"Something hit the door, sir. Perimeter alarms didn't trigger," the guard reported, his voice tight with tension.
Roland motioned for Emily to step further back into the shadows of the hallway. He gave a sharp nod to the guards.
One of the guards slowly approached the door. He checked the security monitor mounted on the wall. His face went entirely pale.
"Sir... you need to see this," the guard said, his voice trembling.
Roland stepped forward and looked at the screen. The high-definition night-vision camera displayed the front porch.
Lying on the Welcome mat was a large, heavy wooden box. It was unmarked, but dark, thick liquid was visibly seeping from the bottom corners, staining the pristine stone porch.
Standing exactly thirty feet away, just beyond the reach of the porch lights, was a lone figure. The man was dressed entirely in black. He wasn't one of Michael's thugs. He stood with a terrifying, unnatural stillness, staring directly into the security camera lens. He slowly raised a hand, pointing a single finger directly at the house, before turning and dissolving seamlessly into the darkness of the surrounding woods.
Roland stared at the screen, his grip on his handgun tightening until his knuckles turned white. The Hayes family hadn't surrendered. They had done something far more desperate, and far more dangerous. They had hired outside help.

"Dad..." Emily whispered from the shadows, sensing the sudden shift in her father's demeanor. "What is it?"
Roland didn't answer. He looked at the bleeding box on the monitor, the bright, artificial colors of the screen casting a sinister glow over his fair, rosy features. The rules of engagement had just been completely rewritten, and the true nightmare was only just beginning.
