Chapter 8

The midnight transfer never went through.

Claire killed it herself at eleven fifty-eight, in full view of the captains, after Martin projected the queued authorizations across the library wall. Each line carried Richard’s override chain and Kevin’s spending tokens. Each destination connected to men, properties, or crew pools that would have become useful only if Claire’s control collapsed.

Captain Vale spoke first.

“You were building a second structure inside the family.”

Richard looked at him with contempt. “I was preserving one.”

That answer told Claire more than a denial would have. Richard did not see his actions as theft. He saw them as recovery. In his mind, the money, the house, the authority, even Noah’s emotional life belonged to the version of the family he thought he should still govern.

Captain Ellis lifted one page from the spending ledger. “Why is Madison’s name attached to imported tennis coaching, resort fees, and custom gifts under ‘operational morale’?”

Kevin opened his mouth.

Madison answered from the doorway.

Because of course she had escaped the upstairs maids too.

“Dad said Aunt Claire was already paying for everything anyway,” she said.

The room turned.

Madison looked frightened now, but not guilty in the way Kevin expected. She looked like a child suddenly realizing adults had handed her luxury and called it normal when it came from someone else’s stolen money.

Kevin hissed, “Go upstairs.”

Madison ignored him.

“You said after tonight Aunt Claire wouldn’t control the cards anymore.”

Claire said nothing.

Reaction before explanation.

Madison kept going because no one stopped her. “Grandpa said Noah needed a lesson because he thinks he’s special. Dad said if Aunt Claire made a scene, everybody would finally see she’s crazy.”

Kevin flinched.

Richard did not.

That difference mattered.

One of the captains looked between them and asked quietly, “And after that?”

Richard answered.

“We would have restored balance.”

Noah, still in Claire’s arms, whispered, “By taking our house?”

Richard looked directly at him.

“By fixing what your mother broke.”

Claire’s face went still.

There it was. The larger betrayal behind the money and the party. Richard did not believe he was simply entitled to challenge Claire. He believed the home itself—the emotional center Noah lived in—needed to be remade around his rules.

He was not stealing from her account because he needed money.

He was stealing because he still thought Claire’s life was his to reorganize.
