Chapter 16

A week later, Claire held Noah’s birthday again.

This time it was small.

No extended Morgan guests. No Richard. No Kevin. Just a handful of safe relatives, the household staff Noah loved, and Madison under watch carrying plates instead of buckets.

The cake was chocolate again.

Noah chose that himself.

When the candles were lit, he looked at Claire with visible uncertainty, as if wishes had become fragile things that might be attacked if he closed his eyes too long.

Claire crouched beside him.

“No one will touch this one,” she said.

Noah nodded.

He closed his eyes.

Made his wish.

Blew out all four candles.

Then he turned and hugged her so hard she nearly lost balance.

“What did you wish for?” she asked.

He considered it seriously. “I wished our house stays nice when I wake up.”

Claire smiled, but it hurt too.

Because that was not a child’s ordinary birthday wish.

It was the wish of someone who had already learned houses could change around him depending on which adults were allowed to remain cruel.

Madison stood a few feet away, watching quietly.

After cake, she walked to Noah and offered him the first slice instead of taking one herself. He studied her for a moment, then accepted it.

That mattered more than any apology.

Later that night, when Noah fell asleep on the sitting-room sofa with frosting at the corner of his mouth, Claire carried him upstairs. Halfway to his room, he stirred and whispered against her shoulder, “Mom?”

“I’m here.”

“My first wish still count?”

She stopped walking.

“Yes.”

“For you?”

Claire kissed his hair.

“Yes.”

When he fell asleep again, she stood for a while outside his room and understood something she had not allowed herself to articulate before.

The family accounts were repaired.

The coup was broken.

Richard was contained.

But Noah’s first ruined wish had already come true in its own way.

He had wished for her.

And in trying to protect him, Claire had finally stopped letting other people rearrange the shape of her own home.
