Chapter 10

Claire did not confront the guesthouse immediately.

She let Richard think she might.

That impatience was one of the few things he still expected from her.

Instead, she spent the next morning with Noah in the breakfast room, relighting four small candles on a fresh slice of cake the kitchen staff had made before dawn. It was not a party. No guests. No music. Just Claire, her son, and a second chance.

Noah looked at the candles cautiously. “No mud?”

Claire smiled faintly. “No mud.”

He leaned forward, closed his eyes, and made his wish.

This time no one interrupted him.

When he blew the candles out, Claire asked gently, “Was yesterday the first time Grandpa and Uncle Kevin were mean to you like that?”

Noah shook his head.

Claire let the silence stay open.

He traced one finger through the frosting. “Grandpa says boys in this family eat what’s left. Uncle Kevin says I cry like a girl. Madison hides my toys when they visit.”

Every answer arrived quietly, without drama, which somehow made it worse.

Claire had protected his body.

She had not seen how long his small emotional world had already been under siege.

By noon, Martin confirmed that two of the men cycling through the guesthouse were former Morgan crew who had been quietly cut from regular assignments years earlier—precisely the sort of men Richard would prefer: resentful, half-loyal, hungry enough to call bitterness principle.

Claire finally moved.

She had the guesthouse surrounded by dusk.

Inside she found not an army, but something in some ways more dangerous: planning. Alternate household maps. shift rosters. internal schedule notes. entries marked “Noah pickup,” “north wing transition,” and “council pressure sequence.”

Kevin went pale when she placed the file in front of him that evening.

“You were already writing where my son would sleep after taking him from me.”

Richard only said, “Contingency is not cruelty.”

Claire laughed then, once and without humor.

“No,” she said. “This is both.”

And when she turned the next page, she found the detail that changed everything again.

A date.

Tonight.

May you like

Richard had not only planned to move money.

He had planned to move Noah.
