Chapter 6

The captains did not defend Richard immediately.

That was the first crack.

The second came from Kevin himself, though he did not realize it at the time.

“It wasn’t theft,” he snapped. “It was redistribution. Claire sits on family money while the rest of us have to ask permission for every breath.”

Captain Ellis turned toward him. “You leased a summer house with family restructuring funds.”

Kevin flushed. “That isn’t the point.”

“No,” Claire said. “It is exactly the point.”

She rose from her chair and walked to the windows. The backyard beyond was still lit from Noah’s abandoned party. The ruined cake had been cleared away, but the patio still looked wrong somehow, as if cruelty left a shape behind even after servants cleaned it.

“He is four,” Claire said without turning. “You humiliated him publicly, struck me in front of guests, and scheduled a four-million-dollar transfer for the same night. So let’s not pretend any of this was about family hardship.”

She turned then.

“Tell them what you planned after midnight.”

Kevin laughed bitterly. “You think you scare me because you can read account lines?”

“No. I think you are going to talk because you were never built to stand alone in a room without Dad telling you what to say.”

That hit.

Richard moved first. “Enough.”

Claire ignored him.

Kevin’s jaw tightened. “We were going to correct the structure.”

“How?”

Richard answered for him. “Emergency council review.”

“For what reason?”

“For instability.”

Claire almost smiled.

Captain Vale frowned. “Instability based on what?”

Richard spread one hand toward the bruises on Kevin’s face as though that answered everything.

“She assaulted her brother at a child’s party. In front of witnesses.”

One captain looked uncomfortable.

Another looked unconvinced.

Claire did not raise her voice. “After he slapped me. After my father laughed while my son was covered in mud. After my niece dumped water over a four-year-old’s birthday cake on instruction.”

Richard’s face hardened. “Madison made a childish mistake.”

Noah’s small voice came from the doorway.

“No, she didn’t.”

Everyone turned.

He stood there in fresh pajamas, still holding that dead birthday candle in one fist. The maid behind him looked horrified to have failed again, but Claire did not send him away.

Noah looked at Richard.

“Grandpa told Madison if she did it, she could keep the new racket and the horse camp.”

Silence.

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Richard stared at the child.

Then Kevin muttered, “He should be in bed.”

That, more than anything, made Captain Ellis understand.

They were not embarrassed by what Noah said.

They were annoyed he said it in front of the wrong audience.
