Chapter 6

The luminous, airy warmth of the dining room offered no sanctuary to Juliette Ward. She stood trembling near the fireplace, her sculpted satin gown looking like a fragile costume in the face of Callum's cold, calculating wrath. The silence stretched, tight and unforgiving, broken only by her ragged, panicked weeping.
Callum stood over her, an imposing monolith of masculine power. His polished leather shoes rested mere inches from the hem of her ruined silk gown. He waited, his patience a weapon as sharp and precise as a scalpel.
"Did you think I would not see the cruelty you hide behind that smile?" Callum asked, his deep voice carrying a measured, lethal calm.
Juliette flinched violently at the question. She dropped her hands, her fair skin streaked with ruined makeup, her eyes wide with primal terror. She knew the stories of what Callum Whitestone did to traitors within his syndicate.
"He is weak, Callum!" Juliette choked out, the venom finally breaking through her tears as self-preservation took over. "He cries over everything! I was trying to make him strong! You need a strong heir, and he is soft!"
"Do you define strength by the ability to endure torture in silence?" Callum inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"I did it for the syndicate!" Juliette pleaded, reaching out to grasp the lapel of his tailored suit. "My family is strong! We are built for this life! I was trying to protect your empire, Callum! If he grows up weak, the rival families will slaughter us all!"
Callum looked down at the trembling woman clinging to his suit. He felt absolutely nothing for her. The affection he had feigned for the sake of the syndicate merger evaporated instantly, leaving behind a cold, calculating void that craved only retribution.
"Do you expect me to harbor a monster under my roof to appease a shipping magnate?" Callum asked.
He didn't wait for her to answer. He reached down with his artistic, tattooed hands and forcefully peeled her fingers off his jacket. He stepped back, severing all physical contact with her forever.
"Is there any reason I shouldn't have my men escort you to the basement holding cells immediately?" Callum inquired, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt with immaculate precision.
"Callum, please, you can't!" Juliette wept, crawling forward on her knees. "My father will kill you when he finds out the engagement is broken! He commands five hundred men! He will burn this city to the ground!"
"Has any man who declared war on me lived long enough to see the ashes?" Callum asked.
He reached into his jacket and retrieved a sleek, encrypted smartphone. He dialed a single digit and pressed the phone to his ear. The small neck tattoo shifted seamlessly with the movement.
"Are my security details stationed at the front doors?" Callum asked into the receiver. "Will you come to the dining room and escort Miss Ward to her vehicle?"
May you like
He lowered the phone and looked at the broken socialite one last time.
"Will you remove the ring, Juliette, or must I have my men cut it from your hand?" Callum asked softly.
