Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling of the Whitestone mansion bathed the grand dining hall in a brilliant, luminous warmth. It was an atmosphere of soft, elegant gold, catching the edges of carved ceiling moldings and reflecting infinitely in the gilded mirrors lining the ivory-paneled walls. Beneath this radiant canopy, the city’s elite gathered around a massive, polished walnut banquet table. Every guest possessed fair, rosy skin, their crisp American accents blending into a sophisticated hum of conversation that floated above the clinking of fine porcelain and crystal stemware. The room smelled faintly of white roses, which were arranged meticulously between tall silver candelabras.
At the head of the table sat Callum Whitestone, a mafia boss whose reputation was as cold as his sharp, perceptive eyes. He was movie-star handsome, radiating a deeply imposing, masculine presence. His broad shoulders filled out a tailored charcoal three-piece suit flawlessly. An angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jaw marked by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble gave him a predatory edge. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back, with a few loose strands falling carelessly over his forehead. Refined artistic tattoos with generous negative space traced across his hands and fingers, and a small, intricate tattoo peeked from the collar of his shirt.
To his right sat his six-year-old son, Ellis. The boy, with his fair cheeks and neatly combed hair, looked small and rigid inside his fine dinner suit. His bow tie had been loosened, and he sat unnaturally still, his polished shoes hovering just above the thick, patterned rug.
Opposite Callum sat his fiancée, Juliette Ward. She was thirty-two, draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her silhouette. Diamond earrings flashed against her rosy skin, and a massive engagement ring caught the candlelight.
Moving silently behind Ellis was Nessa Clarke. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtaking, possessing a softly rounded face, delicate cheekbones, and expressive brows. Her hair was gathered into a loose, elegant low twist. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, a crisp white collar, and cuffs completed her polished appearance.
As Nessa stepped forward to clear a side plate, a linen napkin slipped from the table, drifting silently onto the floor near Ellis’s chair.
"Excuse me," Nessa murmured softly, her American accent a gentle whisper.
She bent gracefully to retrieve the fallen fabric. As her hand brushed the thick rug, Ellis nervously shifted one foot. The movement produced a sharp, metallic clink.

Nessa froze. Beneath the heavy walnut table, hidden by the shadows of the velvet upholstery, a short steel chain pulled taut. One end was fastened securely to the heavy leg of the dining chair; the other was locked tightly around a metal cuff on the six-year-old boy’s ankle. Nessa’s breath hitched in her throat, her eyes widening in absolute horror at the sight.
Callum, whose cold eyes missed nothing in his domain, noticed the abrupt cessation of the housemaid's movement. He watched the way her slender shoulders stiffened. Frowning slightly, he followed Nessa’s downward gaze, leaning slightly over the armrest of his chair to look beneath the table.
