Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Whitestone empire began to shatter.
Nessa held Callum’s intense, unyielding gaze. She ignored Juliette's warning glare. Her inner brows lifted slightly in a helpless, agonizing expression of restrained distress. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, making her expressive eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers.
"Ellis couldn't reach the bathroom," Nessa answered.
Her voice was soft and careful, dropping to a gentle whisper to preserve the little boy's dignity in front of the staring crowd. She pressed her lips together tightly afterward, her fingers twisting the linen napkin against her apron, terrified of the consequences of speaking against the future bride of the mafia boss.
The implication of her words hung in the air like a guillotine blade. The boy had not just been chained; he had been trapped there for hours, suffering a deeply humiliating accident because he was physically restrained.
At the sound of Nessa's defense, Ellis looked up. The six-year-old boy turned his fair, tear-streaked face away from his father and looked directly at Juliette. His eyes glistened with unshed tears, and his small shoulders drew inward, shrinking under the weight of his own embarrassment.
"I asked. You said no," Ellis stated.
The words emerged quietly, entirely without accusation or anger. It was the simple, heartbreaking confusion of a child trying to understand why he had been subjected to such cruelty.
Callum froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His eyes lingered on Ellis for one silent, agonizing beat as the boy’s words cemented the reality of the torture.
Slowly, terrifyingly, Callum’s eyes shifted. His head followed slightly, tracking across the white damask tablecloth until his gaze landed squarely on Juliette.
His sharply defined jaw settled into a firm, unforgiving line. The extremely short stubble on his face seemed to bristle with suppressed violence. Keeping his heavy, protective hand firmly on his son’s shoulder, he held Juliette’s eyes with cold, unwavering attention.

Juliette’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, to spin another lie, to deflect the blame onto the housemaid, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man sitting opposite her.
Every guest in the room remained completely, terrifyingly silent. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream. The luminous, airy room offered no sanctuary to the woman caught in the crosshairs of his perceptive eyes. The engagement dinner was officially poised on the edge of an abyss, waiting for Callum Whitestone to pull the trigger.
