Chapter 7

The grand foyer felt like a powder keg placed too close to an open flame. Silas Ward stared up at Callum, his arrogant sneer faltering for a fraction of a second as he met the absolute, terrifying void in the older mafia boss's eyes. The four Whitestone enforcers surrounding them tightened their grips on their weapons, waiting for the slightest nod from Callum to open fire.

“Are you threatening me in my own foyer, Silas?” Callum asked, his voice remaining quiet and deliberate, the measured pauses carrying the weight of an executioner's blade.

“I am promising you destruction!” Silas barked, trying to regain his bravado. “My father is mobilizing the entire syndicate as we speak! You have a hundred men, max. We have five hundred! You cannot win a war against us over a broken engagement!”

“Do you believe numbers can save a family rotting from the inside out?” Callum inquired, his hands resting casually in his pockets, completely unbothered by the threat of an army.

Silas gritted his teeth. “You are insane. Hand her over, Callum. This is your last chance.”

“Will you tell your father that his daughter remains in my cellar until she answers for the blood on her hands?” Callum asked, turning his broad shoulders slightly, dismissing the younger man entirely.

“You son of a bitch,” Silas hissed, lunging forward.

Before Silas could even raise his fist, Callum moved with blinding, lethal speed. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply reached out, his tattooed hand closing like a steel vice around Silas’s throat. Callum lifted the younger capo off the marble floor with one arm, the sheer masculine power in his shoulders evident as Silas choked and thrashed wildly in the air.

“Did I invite you into my home to listen to your insults?” Callum asked, his cold eyes boring into Silas’s rapidly purpling face.

He held Silas suspended for three agonizing seconds before violently throwing him backward. Silas crashed onto the polished marble, gasping frantically for air, clutching his bruised throat.

“Will you crawl back to your vehicles before I decide to keep you here as well?” Callum asked, looking down at the pathetic figure on the floor.

Marcus grabbed Silas by the collar of his expensive suit and hauled him to his feet, shoving him roughly toward the heavy front doors. “Get out of here before the boss changes his mind.”

Silas stumbled out the doors, coughing violently. As he reached his armored SUVs, he turned back, screaming a final, desperate threat. “You’re dead, Whitestone! You hear me? We’re coming for you tonight!”

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, sealing the mansion once more.

Callum stood in the center of the foyer, adjusting his collar. The confrontation had barely raised his heart rate, but he knew the reality of Silas's threat. A war was inevitable now.

From the shadows of the second-floor landing, Nessa stood frozen, her hands gripping the carved wooden banister. She had heard the entire exchange. Her beautiful, softly rounded face was pale with terror. She realized the massive, apocalyptic scale of the danger surrounding them. The entire city was about to burn because of what happened at the dinner table.

Callum looked up, his watchful eyes finding her in the shadows instantly.

“Are you eavesdropping on my negotiations, Nessa?” Callum asked, his deep voice carrying up to the landing.

Nessa swallowed hard, slowly descending the grand staircase. She wore her sophisticated black maid dress, looking incredibly fragile against the backdrop of heavily armed men.

“I’m sorry, sir,” Nessa whispered, stopping a few steps above him. “I... I just wanted to know if we were safe.”

“Do you believe I would allow a single one of those men to cross my threshold while you and my son are inside?” Callum asked, his gaze softening almost imperceptibly as he looked up at her.

“They have an army, Mr. Whitestone,” Nessa said, her expressive brows drawing together in deep concern.

“Do you think an army of cowards can break a fortress built by kings?” Callum inquired.
