Chapter 2

The silence in the dining room was absolute, a suffocating vacuum that seemed to extinguish the very oxygen in the air. The tall candles flickered, casting erratic, dancing shadows across Juliette’s increasingly pale face. Her diamond earrings trembled as a subtle, uncontrollable shake took over her body. She stared into Callum’s cold, observant eyes, desperately searching for a sliver of mercy that did not exist.

“Are you all waiting for a formal invitation to leave my home?” Callum asked, his deep voice carrying flawlessly across the long, polished walnut tables. He did not look at the guests; his gaze remained entirely fixed on the woman sitting opposite him.

The question was a command. Instantly, the scraping of velvet dining chairs against the hardwood floor sounded like a chaotic symphony. Dozens of capos, crime bosses, and politicians scrambled to their feet, abandoning their fine porcelain plates and crystal stemware. They moved with a hurried, terrified silence, practically sprinting toward the grand double doors of the dining room. No one offered their goodbyes. No one dared to look back.

Within two minutes, the massive, luxurious room was entirely empty, save for the four of them: Callum, Juliette, Nessa, and Ellis. The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, echoing with a hollow finality.

“Callum, darling, please,” Juliette whispered, her voice cracking as the reality of her isolation set in. She reached out across the table, her engagement ring flashing in the candlelight. “The boy is unruly. You know how difficult he can be when you are away on business. He requires strict discipline.”

“Is chaining a six-year-old child to a piece of furniture your definition of discipline?” Callum asked, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

“I didn't mean for him to have an accident!” Juliette cried out, her chest heaving beneath her sculpted satin gown. “He was just being stubborn! I told him he could go after dessert! I was trying to teach him manners for the dinner party!”

“Do you believe stripping a child of his basic dignity teaches him anything other than terror?” Callum inquired, rising slowly from his chair. His broad shoulders completely dominated the space as he stood up, towering over the table.

Nessa immediately dropped to her knees beside Ellis. She ignored the expensive velvet of the chair and the polished wood, wrapping her arms around the trembling boy. She pulled a clean cloth napkin from the table, gently dabbing at his tear-streaked face.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Nessa whispered fiercely, her own tears threatening to spill. “You did nothing wrong. It is not your fault.”

Callum stepped around the table, his polished leather shoes making slow, deliberate sounds against the hardwood. He stopped directly beside Juliette’s chair. The sheer, masculine power radiating from him forced her to shrink back against the upholstery.

“Did you think I would remain blind to the cruelty inflicted upon my own blood?” Callum asked, his observant eyes narrowing into dark, lethal slits.

“I did it for you!” Juliette sobbed, real tears of panic finally spilling over her cheeks. “I wanted to present the perfect family to the commission! You are never here to manage him! I am the one who has to maintain the image of this house!”

“Do you truly believe a pristine image is worth the soul of my son?” Callum asked, leaning down slightly so his angular face was inches from hers.

Juliette gasped, pressing her hands against her chest. “Callum, please! My family brought you the western ports! We are an alliance! You cannot do this to me over a spoiled child!”

“Are you attempting to use your father's ships to buy your way out of my wrath?” Callum asked, his voice dropping to an icy whisper that chilled the room far more than the winter air outside.
