Chapter 6

The following morning, the atmosphere inside the Whitestone mansion was electric with impending violence. The luxurious veneer of the estate had been stripped away, replaced by the grim reality of a mafia fortress preparing for a siege. Heavily armed guards in dark suits patrolled the ivory-paneled corridors, their automatic weapons held at the ready.

Callum stood in his private study, a room lined with dark mahogany bookshelves and heavy leather furniture. He stood by the massive window, looking out over the sprawling, frost-covered grounds of his estate. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing only the tailored charcoal vest and a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate, refined tattoos wrapping around his forearms.

The heavy mahogany doors of the study swung open. Marcus entered, his scarred face tight with tension.

“Are they here, Marcus?” Callum asked, not turning away from the window.

“Yes, Boss,” Marcus reported grimly. “Silas Ward just pulled up to the front gates with three armored SUVs. He has twenty heavily armed men with him. He is demanding to see you immediately.”

“Did you truly expect Juliette's brother to wait for an invitation?” Callum inquired, turning his broad shoulders to face his underboss.

“He’s furious, Callum. He says if we don't hand Juliette over right now, they will breach the gates and burn the house down,” Marcus warned. “The commission is already buzzing. The Ward family is painting this as an unprovoked kidnapping to steal their shipping routes.”

“Do they believe a false narrative will shield them from the truth of what was done to my son?” Callum asked, walking toward his massive oak desk.

“Silas doesn't care about the boy, Boss. He only cares about the disrespect to his family name,” Marcus said. “What are your orders?”

“Will you escort Silas into the grand foyer, alone, and disarm him before he crosses the threshold?” Callum asked.

Marcus nodded sharply. “Understood. We’ll strip him of his weapons. But his men are heavily armed just outside the gates.”

“Do I fear the dogs barking outside my door?” Callum asked quietly, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt.

Minutes later, Callum descended the grand marble staircase into the main foyer. The cascading crystal chandeliers were unlit, the morning light filtering through the high windows casting long, cold shadows across the marble floor.

Silas Ward stood in the center of the foyer, surrounded by four of Callum’s armed enforcers. Silas was a younger man, dressed in a flashy designer suit, his face flushed with arrogant rage. He glared at Callum as the mafia boss descended the stairs with measured, deliberate steps.

“Where is my sister, Whitestone?” Silas demanded, his voice echoing loudly in the cavernous space. “You have lost your damn mind! You cannot hold a Ward hostage in your own home!”

Callum stopped on the final step, towering over the younger capo. His cold, watchful eyes analyzed Silas with the detachment of a butcher observing livestock.

“Do you believe you give orders in my home, Silas?” Callum asked, his deep voice rumbling through the foyer.

“I am not giving orders, I am giving you a final warning!” Silas spat, taking a step forward before Marcus’s massive hand slammed into his chest, stopping him dead. “Release Juliette right now, or the alliance is dead, and we go to war.”

“Are you willing to die for a woman who chains children like dogs?” Callum asked, his jaw settling into a sharp, uncompromising line.

Silas sneered. “She was disciplining a brat! You are soft, Callum! You are letting a spoiled child dictate the politics of the entire eastern seaboard!”

“Do you consider the torture of an innocent to be mere politics?” Callum inquired, stepping off the stairs and closing the distance between them until he was mere inches from Silas’s face.

“It's business!” Silas shouted. “And right now, business dictates that you hand her over!”

“Shall we see how much your business is worth when it is buried in ashes?” Callum asked softly.
