Chapter 15

Arthur lost everything before sunrise.

No execution.

No dramatic disappearance.

Gabriel understood Arthur too well now.

Arthur had built his identity around being necessary.

So Gabriel made him unnecessary.

Every private channel closed.

Every capo changed routes.

Every security code Caleb had maintained was replaced.

Every memory-card archive was seized.

Every man Arthur had manipulated heard enough truth to understand the pattern.

Arthur sat in the old east gallery under guard.

The same room where he had shoved Olivia.

He looked smaller.

Not weak.

Just ordinary.

He hated that.

“You’ll need me.”

Gabriel stood near the repaired vent.

“No.”

“You don’t know half the relationships I managed.”

“Good.”

Arthur laughed.

“You think honesty keeps men loyal?”

“No.”

“What does?”

Gabriel looked toward the ballroom.

“Knowing the person beside them isn’t feeding their private words to someone else.”

Arthur smiled bitterly.

“Naive.”

“Maybe.”

“You’ll fail.”

“Maybe.”

That answer bothered Arthur more than certainty.

Because Gabriel could admit uncertainty without surrendering authority.

Arthur had never understood that.

Caleb entered.

No security pin.

He placed his access card on the table.

Arthur stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Stepping down.”

“You idiot.”

Caleb flinched.

Then continued.

“Until Gabriel decides whether I’m worth trusting.”

Arthur laughed.

“He’ll never trust you.”

Caleb looked at him.

“Then I live with that.”

Silence.

Consequences accepted voluntarily.

Another thing Arthur could not comprehend.

Olivia entered behind him.

Arthur looked at her uniform.

Still seeking superiority.

“You’re still cleaning rooms.”

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“After all this?”

“I like my job.”

That confused him.

She continued:

“I just don’t like you deciding it makes me less than you.”

Arthur’s smile vanished.

Nero entered last.

Walked directly past Arthur.

Sat beside Olivia.

Gabriel noticed Arthur watch the dog.

Not fear.

Jealousy.

The animal had chosen without bribery.

Without threat.

Without leverage.

Gabriel looked at Arthur.

“You built a second organization inside my house.”

Arthur lifted his chin.

“Yes.”

Gabriel’s voice stayed calm.

“And a housekeeper with a screwdriver found the first crack.”

Arthur had no answer.
