Chapter 11

Gabriel entered the ballroom with Caleb beside him.

Nero walked ahead.

The music had stopped.

Forty guests stood silent.

Nine capos near the center.

Arthur stood on the small charity stage.

A tablet in his hand.

“Finally.”

Gabriel stopped.

Arthur smiled.

“I wondered whether the dog would lead you back.”

No one laughed.

Arthur noticed.

Then held up the tablet.

“Gentlemen.”

He looked at the capos.

“You deserve to know what your boss says when you leave the room.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Arthur played the first recording.

Gabriel’s voice:

Vincent is getting reckless.

Vincent Moretti stiffened.

Arthur smiled.

“Interesting?”

Another clip.

Peter protects his son too much.

Peter’s face hardened.

Another.

I don’t trust Michael with east routes yet.

Michael looked toward Gabriel.

Arthur’s smile widened.

“There.”

“What?” Gabriel asked.

“Your organization cracking.”

Gabriel looked at Vincent.

“Yes. I said it.”

Arthur froze slightly.

Gabriel turned to Peter.

“I said that too.”

Then Michael.

“And that.”

Silence.

Arthur recovered.

“So you admit it.”

“Yes.”

“You insulted them.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at his capos.

“I evaluated them.”

Vincent asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Gabriel answered:

“I should have.”

That changed the room.

Arthur hadn’t expected accountability.

Gabriel continued.

“Arthur counted on me denying private doubts.”

He looked at everyone.

“So I won’t.”

Then he pointed at Arthur.

“He recorded all of you too.”

Faces changed.

Arthur’s smile faded.

Gabriel continued:

“Every complaint.”

“Every insecurity.”

“Every angry sentence you trusted him with.”

Arthur snapped:

“That’s irrelevant.”

Gabriel almost smiled.

“Why?”

Silence.

“Because your recordings only work if everyone believes they were special.”

The capos began looking at Arthur differently.

Gabriel stepped closer.

“He told each man what another supposedly thought.”

Vincent frowned.

Peter looked at Michael.

Pieces connecting.

Arthur raised his voice.

“He’s manipulating you.”

Olivia entered from the ballroom doors carrying the blue linen pouch.

Arthur stared.

Gabriel looked at her.

She emptied dozens of memory cards onto the charity table.

“They’re all labeled.”

Arthur’s face changed.

Olivia continued:

“Everyone.”

The room went silent.

Then Vincent asked Arthur:

“You recorded me too?”

May you like

Arthur said nothing.

That silence destroyed more than any confession could.
