Chapter 13

The live archive was worse than the hidden room.

Not because of the recordings.

Because of the plans.

One file for each capo.

Vincent:

PROMOTE AFTER PUBLIC SUPPORT.

Peter:

THREATEN SON IF RESISTANT.

Michael:

OFFER EAST ROUTES.

Samuel:

REVEAL AFFAIR IF NECESSARY.

Arthur had not built loyalty.

He had built customized cages.

Gabriel read in silence.

The capos read too.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Arthur stood under guard.

Still composed.

Almost.

Then Vincent found his page.

His daughter’s school route listed beneath his name.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

Arthur answered calmly:

“Insurance.”

Vincent looked at him.

“My daughter is six.”

“And?”

That word broke the room.

Not because Arthur raised his voice.

Because he didn’t.

He truly saw nothing wrong.

Peter found photographs of his son.

Michael found notes about his sick mother.

Samuel found a recording of his wife crying after an argument.

Arthur watched them.

Then smiled.

“Now you understand why structure works.”

Gabriel stared.

“No.”

“What?”

“They understand what you are.”

Arthur laughed.

“They already knew.”

Vincent stepped forward.

Gabriel raised one hand.

Vincent stopped.

Arthur smiled.

“Still protecting me?”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at Vincent.

“I’m protecting you from giving him one final victory.”

Arthur’s smile faded.

Gabriel turned toward the archive.

“What was my cage?”

Silence.

Caleb looked toward Arthur.

Gabriel repeated:

“What did you plan to use on me after I disappeared?”

Arthur finally smiled again.

“Nero.”

Gabriel went still.

Olivia whispered:

“What?”

Arthur looked at the dog.

“Your one uncomplicated loyalty.”

Nero growled.

Arthur continued:

“We knew you’d come for him.”

Gabriel’s eyes hardened.

“You planned to take my dog.”

Arthur laughed.

“Not take.”

Pause.

“Lose.”

The cruelty was deliberate.

He wanted Gabriel angry.

He wanted spectacle.

Gabriel refused.

“Where?”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

Caleb whispered:

“Dad…”

Arthur glared.

Caleb continued:

“He had a kennel site outside Eastport.”

Gabriel looked at his son’s security supervisor.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Arthur smiled.

“See? Even he wasn’t important enough.”

Caleb’s face twisted.

Then Olivia noticed one final file.

Not Gabriel.

Not Nero.

Her name.

OLIVIA HAYES — REMOVE BEFORE CLEANUP.

She went pale.

Arthur looked at her.

May you like

Then smiled.

“You really should have stayed a maid.”
