Chapter 14

Olivia stared at her file.

Remove before cleanup.

No ambiguity.

Arthur watched her fear with satisfaction.

“You see?”

He tilted his head.

“Curiosity has consequences.”

Gabriel stepped between them.

Arthur laughed.

“She isn’t family.”

“No.”

Arthur raised an eyebrow.

Gabriel continued:

“She’s loyal.”

That silenced him.

Olivia looked at Gabriel.

He did not soften the truth.

“Arthur planned to make you disappear.”

She swallowed.

“Why?”

Arthur answered.

“Because you found the vent.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You marked her before tonight.”

Arthur’s face changed.

Right.

Olivia’s first notebook entry had already called her unreliable.

Gabriel continued.

“Why?”

Silence.

Caleb said:

“Nero.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Gabriel looked at Caleb.

“What about Nero?”

Caleb hesitated.

“Olivia is the only staff member he follows at night.”

Olivia frowned.

Caleb continued.

“Dad thought she was teaching him routes.”

Arthur snapped:

“She was.”

Olivia stared.

“I give him leftover chicken.”

A few capos almost laughed.

Arthur’s face darkened.

“You encouraged him.”

“To like me?”

“You made him unpredictable.”

Nero sat beside Olivia.

As if proving the point.

Gabriel almost smiled.

Arthur had spent months building systems around human fear.

A housekeeper feeding a dog had created something he could not model.

Trust.

Nero smelled devices.

Followed Olivia.

Refused Caleb.

Barked until someone listened.

Arthur looked at the dog with open contempt.

“Animals ruin disciplined environments.”

Gabriel replied:

“So do decent people.”

Arthur scoffed.

“You think kindness runs Moretti?”

“No.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“But fear doesn’t own it.”

Vincent closed the archive file containing his daughter’s route.

Then removed Arthur’s family pin.

Arthur jerked back.

“You don’t touch that.”

Vincent looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel said nothing.

Vincent placed the pin on the table.

No title.

No announcement.

Arthur stared.

Then looked toward Caleb.

“Give it back.”

Caleb did not move.

“Caleb.”

Nothing.

Arthur’s voice sharpened.

“I am your father.”

Caleb finally answered:

“Yes.”

Arthur’s face relaxed slightly.

Then Caleb finished:

May you like

“That’s the problem.”

And for the first time in his life, Arthur Vale gave an order his son simply refused to obey.
