Chapter 12

Evan Hale came to me voluntarily.

Victor begged him not to.

Margot insisted.

Good.

Evan looked destroyed before sitting.

“I started the fire.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“You started something intended to scare people out of a room.”

I leaned forward.

“The fire became larger than your plan.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

Both truths.

No exaggeration.

No absolution.

“Why?”

He hated conflict.

That was his explanation.

Thomas was dead.

Reed wanted the recording destroyed.

Margot wanted truth exposed.

Victor wanted peace.

Evan believed one controlled scare would force everyone to abandon the archive and buy time.

Instead it killed Daniel.

Nearly killed me.

Destroyed part of the estate.

Classic cowardice disguised as mediation.

“You wanted everyone to stop fighting.”

“Yes.”

“So you made danger.”

He closed his eyes.

That was the contradiction.

People who fear conflict often create worse conflict by avoiding direct truth.

Evan lost all Vale access.

Not because he was Vale.

Because he endangered Vale.

He returned to his own life.

No command.

No estate.

No private family mediation.

Victor asked whether I hated him.

“No.”

He looked relieved.

Then:

“I don’t trust him.”

Relief ended.

Good.

Those are different.

Margot stayed nearby for a month.

We talked about Elise.

Argued.

Cried.

Laughed.

She told me things my wife never said.

Some hurt.

Some healed.

None changed the past.

Then she asked:

“What happens to Reed?”

“I don’t know yet.”

She nodded.

Good answer.

Then:

“Don’t make punishment your proof that you loved Daniel.”

That stopped me.

She was right.

Daniel did not die so I could become cruel.

He died making sure two people escaped a fire someone else started.

His value did not need revenge to validate it.

That changed what I did next.
