Chapter 11

Nell asked where Reed went.
Children notice absences even when adults wish they didn’t.
“He’s not coming here.”
“Why?”
“Because he hurt you.”
She considered.
“Daddy said bad people can say sorry.”
Daniel had taught well.
“Yes.”
“Then Reed sorry?”
“Not yet.”
She accepted that.
Then asked:
“Can I have bread?”
My chest tightened.
“Yes.”
She had started asking permission for every bite.
That made me angrier than Reed’s punches.
We changed that immediately.
Food available.
No earning.
No waiting.
No horse feed.
June Brooks returned two days later.
Alive.
She had gone north because Victor Hale warned her something was happening.
She took one suitcase because she expected to collect Nell later.
But Reed got to the child first.
How?
A housekeeper loyal to Thomas’s old network.
Another name on Elise’s list.
The network still lived in small habits.
Who could pick up a child.
Who could open a gate.
Who could issue an instruction “for the family.”
I removed those automatic privileges.
Not because everyone was dangerous.
Because access without verification had become the family’s favorite weapon.
June hugged Nell for almost ten minutes.
I looked away.
Then June came to me.
“Daniel thought you’d believe Reed.”
That hurt.
“Why?”
“Because Reed was blood.”
Fair.
Would I have?
Maybe.
Before the fire?
Possibly.
Daniel had hidden evidence instead of confronting me because he doubted my ability to choose truth over family.
That was mine to carry.
June handed me one final note from her brother.
If August survives, tell him I’m sorry I didn’t say it sooner.
I read it twice.
Then wrote nothing back.
Dead men do not need replies.
Living children do.
I arranged a permanent home for Nell with June.
Not under my control.
Important.
Support.
Security.
Choice.
June accepted help but refused to move onto Vale property.
Smart.
I respected it.
Nell still visited.
May you like
Her choice.
And every time she did, the stable stall remained open.
