Chapter 8

I gathered the senior household staff the next morning.

Nell did not attend.

This was adult responsibility.

I placed one torn cardboard half against the wall.

Smiling Nell.

Perfect.

Then I asked:

“How many of you saw the real Nell upset at an event where this kind of photograph appeared?”

Hands rose slowly.

Seven.

“How many asked why?”

Four.

“How many accepted Marcella’s explanation?”

All four.

Good.

Not confession theater.

Pattern.

Then I asked:

“Who believed I approved the quiet room?”

Five.

I had never heard the phrase.

“Who believed I wanted Nell removed quickly from receptions?”

Nearly everyone.

Why?

Because I often left early with her.

They interpreted:

Boss wants child out.

In reality:

Dad leaves with tired daughter.

Same behavior.

Different meaning.

Marcella supplied the interpretation.

I corrected it.

“If Nell is tired, she leaves because she needs rest.”

“If she is upset, someone helps her.”

“If she wants me, I am told.”

No one decides her feelings are inconvenient to my image.

Simple.

Then Beatrice asked:

“What about photographs?”

I looked at the smiling cardboard face.

“Photographs are photographs.”

Not proof of happiness.

Not attendance.

Not consent.

If someone asks where Nell is, answer where Nell is.

Do not point to a picture.

The room almost smiled.

Sounds ridiculous when stated plainly.

Good.

Then I tore the remaining cardboard half again.

Nell later became furious.

“That was my picture!”

Fair.

I had destroyed something with her face on it without asking.

Another lesson.

I apologized.

She considered.

Then:

“Okay.”

I offered to print a normal copy.

“No.”

May you like

Good.

Her choice.
