Chapter 12

Celian returned to work in a smaller role.

Not family scheduling.

Vendor coordination.

He asked me once:

“Do you trust me?”

“Less.”

Honest.

He nodded.

“Can I earn it back?”

“Probably.”

No guarantee.

That mattered.

Later he proposed something useful.

At large events, children would have a designated caregiver with direct authority to remove them from pressure—but also direct access to parents.

Not event planners.

Not hosts.

Not social secretaries.

A human responsible to the child first.

Simple.

I approved.

Not because systems solve everything.

Because ambiguity had helped Marcella.

Clear roles reduce borrowed authority.

Nell called the new caregiver “the escape lady.”

Accurate.

At her fifth birthday, the escape lady asked whether she wanted a break.

Nell said:

May you like

“No. Cake.”

Also accurate.
