Chapter 3

The air around the low worktable grew suffocatingly thick. The festive melodies of the string quartet playing in the corner seemed to fade into a dull buzz. Nell’s hands became perfectly still above the burgundy ribbon, her fingers hovering in mid-air. Her breath hitched in her throat, a ragged, painful sound.

She looked at the emerald gown, the physical manifestation of her mother's stolen life, and the horrific reality of the theft crashed over her. Celine had not merely taken money; she had stolen time, medicine, and hope.

The color vanished entirely from Nell’s fair, rosy skin. She felt the heavy, scrutinizing stares of the mafia guests burning into her back. She slowly raised her head and met Dorian’s intense, unblinking gaze. She knew the danger of defying the woman who wore the boss's ring, but looking into Dorian's eyes, a spark of desperate courage ignited in her chest.

"That was my mother’s hospital money," Nell said.

She spoke quietly, her voice pushing through a violent tremor in her breath. The declaration carried a shattering, vulnerable clarity across the silent space.

The immediate vicinity froze. The absolute, terrifying tension radiating from the revelation infected the room instantly. Like a ripple across a dark pond, the shockwave spread outward. Every single guest at the nearby velvet sofas stopped eating. They stopped speaking. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads in unison, their attention snapping entirely toward the mafia boss.

Dorian Westbrook did not flinch. His broad shoulders remained perfectly still beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at the tears streaming down the housemaid's face, the utter devastation that ruined her neat uniform. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular face was suffocating.

He held Nell’s gaze. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.

"Nell," Dorian said.

His deep, low voice dropped a full octave, echoing powerfully across the polished marble floors. The sound was not a shout, but the absolute gravity of his tone commanded immediate, total obedience.

"How much?" Dorian asked.

The question was a lethal inquiry, a surgical strike that bypassed the petty household politics and targeted the unforgivable sin of stealing from the innocent.

Nell steadies a trembling breath. She looked down at Archie, who was looking up at her with wide, confused eyes, still holding the unfinished bow in his small hands. She looked back up at the terrifying mafia boss, laying her absolute ruin bare for him to see.

"Nine months," Nell whispered, the tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Every penny."

The collective gasp from the surrounding velvet sofas was audible. The psychological torture Celine had just inflicted upon a grieving, desperate woman was so monstrous, so completely devoid of humanity, that even the mafia capos looked away in disgust.

Dorian’s broad shoulders went completely rigid. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fingers curled into fists. He stared at the emerald satin gown, the horrific reality of his fiancée's cruelty locking into his mind with terrifying precision.

He moved with incredibly gentle, deliberate care. Dorian stepped right beside Nell and Archie, positioning his body firmly to shield the housemaid and his son. He faced Celine entirely.

Dorian’s gaze briefly lowered to the elaborate emerald gown before returning to Celine’s eyes. His jaw tightened slightly; the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held a cold, unwavering stare.

Celine’s polished smile disappeared completely. The color vanished entirely from her fair skin, turning it the shade of ash. Her diamond earrings trembled as a subtle, uncontrollable shake took over her body. She looked down at the satin, realizing she was entirely trapped. The sequence ended in profound, terrifying silence.
