Chapter 1

The grand drawing room of the Westbrook estate was a breathtaking monument to extreme wealth, completely transformed for the annual Christmas Eve gift exchange. A flood of warm, golden cinematic light poured from enormous crystal chandeliers suspended high above the vaulted ceiling, casting a luminous glow that banished any trace of the freezing winter night outside. The illumination was pure and radiant, completely free of any heavy yellow cast, reflecting flawlessly off polished cream marble floors and towering mirrored walls. Dozens of tall ivory candles burned steadily in gilded candelabras, their flickering flames casting dancing shadows against heavy silk drapes and carved walnut furniture. It was an atmosphere of soft, elegant warmth, a carefully constructed illusion masking the ruthless reality of the syndicate that owned it all.

A magnificent Christmas tree dominated the far wall, glowing intensely with dense fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and thick burgundy ribbons. Wrapped presents of all sizes surrounded a low, ribbon-covered worktable in the center of the room. Dozens of elite guests—capos, politicians, and high-ranking family members—mingled around the plush velvet sofas, their fair, rosy skin glowing in the light as they sipped champagne and exchanged holiday pleasantries.

At the epicenter of the room stood Dorian Westbrook. At thirty-three, the mafia boss was a man of striking, terrifying masculinity. His broad shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit to absolute perfection. His angular face, framed by naturally swept-back dark hair and very short, neat stubble, possessed a cold, statuesque beauty that demanded immediate submission. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch caught the golden light as he observed his domain. Artistic tattoos, utilizing striking negative space, decorated his fingers and hands, while a small, elegant artistic tattoo peeked out just above his crisp white collar. He had just returned from a month-long excursion securing the northern territories, and his presence commanded the absolute attention of the room.

"The shipments have been secured, Dorian," murmured Silas, a senior capo standing to his left. "The customs officials accepted their holiday envelopes without a single complaint."

Dante turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto his subordinate. He spoke in a deep, perfectly controlled voice, measuring every single syllable. "Are they accepting the money out of loyalty, Silas, or merely out of fear?"

"Fear is a reliable type of loyalty, Boss," Silas chuckled nervously, taking a sip from his crystal glass. "They know exactly what happens if they cross this family."

"Ensure they do not forget," Dorian replied softly, his tone carrying a lethal edge that instantly silenced the immediate area.

Seated gracefully on a velvet settee nearby was Celine Rowe, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of aristocratic perfection, draped in an elaborate emerald satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her curves. Heavy diamond earrings flashed at her neck, matching the icy, polished, and composed public smile she projected to the room.

"You see, darling? Everything is perfectly under control," Celine purred, rising from her seat and gliding over to rest a manicured hand lightly on Dorian’s tailored sleeve. "We have so much to celebrate tonight. The merger of our families will make this syndicate entirely untouchable. The commission is thrilled."

"Does invincibility require constant celebration, Celine?" Dorian asked, gently withdrawing his arm. "Or does it simply exist without the need for applause?"

"You are always so serious," she laughed, a delicate, musical sound that didn't reach her calculating eyes. "Come, let us enjoy the gift exchange."
