Chapter 2

Weaving through the crowded room was six-year-old Archie, Dorian’s son. Dressed in a sharp charcoal suit and a burgundy bow tie, the little boy was a bright spark of genuine innocence in a room full of predators. He ran toward the low worktable where the staff was meticulously wrapping the final presents.
Standing near the table was Nell Bennett. At twenty-five, the housemaid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty with delicate features and incredibly expressive eyes. But tonight, she looked completely shattered. Her fitted black maid dress was deeply creased. Her pristine white apron was rumpled. Her dark hair was disheveled, with loose strands falling around her face, and her white ruffled maid headband sat slightly askew. Nell moved with a vulnerable, exhausted manner, her hands trembling slightly as she worked. Her fair, rosy skin was washed out, and her eyes were severely puffy and darkened from prolonged, agonizing crying.
"Nell, ensure the corners on that box are perfectly crisp," hissed Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, walking past the worktable. "Miss Rowe is watching. She will have you thrown out into the snow if it isn't perfect."
"I... I am trying, Mrs. Gable," Nell whispered, her voice cracking as a fresh tear escaped her swollen eyes.
"You have to survive tonight, child," the older woman pleaded, giving her a gentle, sympathetic look. "Just wrap the gifts and keep your head down."
Nell took a shuddering breath, focusing entirely on the task at hand to keep her hands from visibly shaking. During Dorian's absence, Celine had effectively taken over the household. With terrifying, methodical cruelty, the fiancée had withheld three months of Nell’s wages, citing completely invented infractions and penalties. Celine knew exactly what that money was for. She knew Nell's mother was dying and desperately needed hospital treatment. Instead, Celine had taken the funds and spent them on the elaborate emerald satin gown she was currently wearing.
"Are you almost done, Mommy?" Archie asked, swinging his legs as he climbed onto a small footstool beside her. The boy affectionately called her Mommy, a title that infuriated Celine but warmed Nell's broken heart.
"Almost, sweetie," Nell replied, forcing a small, tired smile as she helped Archie tie a burgundy ribbon around a large present.
Suddenly, the scent of expensive perfume washed over the table. Celine Rowe glided into the immediate, bright circle of the worktable, completely bypassing the capos and politicians. She stopped in front of a tall, gilded mirror situated right beside the table, turning slightly to admire the luxurious drape of the emerald satin.
Archie looked up from the ribbon, his young face lighting up with innocent pride. He looked directly at the woman admiring her reflection.
"Auntie, Mommy bought your princess dress!" Archie announced cheerfully.
The child’s quiet declaration hung in the air, a stark contrast to the surrounding conversations about real estate and political maneuvering. Celine had told the boy that Nell had "helped buy" the Christmas dress, twisting the theft into a manipulative lie. Archie, entirely innocent, assumed the dress was a generous Christmas present from his favorite maid.

Celine’s polished smile briefly faltered, a flash of genuine panic crossing her aristocratic features. She took a sharp, shallow breath and forced the corners of her mouth back up, returning the smile with visible effort. She looked directly at Dorian, who had just stepped up behind her.
"Staff pay for their mistakes, darling," Celine said smoothly, her voice dripping with a condescending, dismissive sweetness.
